Food packaging stations often need to control airborne particles and microorganisms to reduce the risk of contamination during product exposure. Some food companies install FFU above the packaging station to provide filtered clean air and form local protection.
But food packaging stations are different from closed clean rooms. Packaging operations are usually open, with product, packaging materials and personnel all moving in the same area. The clean air supply provided by FFU needs to be coordinated with operation management, personnel hygiene and material cleaning to form effective protection.
FFU cannot replace cleaning and disinfection, personnel management and material control in food production. Its function is to provide filtered air supply, reduce particle levels in the air at the workstation, and reduce external contamination from entering the product exposure area. Aili Industry has complete production capabilities in FFU complete machines and food industry supporting equipment, and can provide air supply solutions based on packaging station conditions. For the basic structure of the FFU machine, you can refer toAili Industrial FFU fan filter unit。
Before using FFU, first determine the product exposure area. During the packaging process, which parts of the product are directly exposed to the air, which parts are covered by packaging materials, and how long the exposure time is. Exposed areas are the focus of clean protection.
The product exposure area usually includes the position where the product enters the packaging station from the conveyor belt, the waiting position of the product before packaging, and the position where the product is combined with the packaging material. If these locations are within the FFU air supply coverage, the protection effect will be better. If the exposed area deviates from supply air coverage, it may be necessary to adjust the FFU position or add local protection.
Exposure areas should be determined based on the packaging process and product characteristics. Exposure requirements may vary for different products and need to be confirmed with food handlers.
Personnel operations are the main source of disturbance in open workstations. People walking around, moving their arms, or getting close to the product may change the direction of the airflow and bring outside air into the protected area. If a person stands between the product and the FFU air supply, their body may block the clean air flow.
To reduce personnel disturbance, we can start from several aspects. Specify the operating position and movement range to prevent personnel from frequently passing through the air supply area. Adjust the FFU air supply direction so that the clean airflow covers the exposed area from above or from the side of the product. Use soft curtains, baffles or air curtains to reduce the interference of people's bodies with airflow. Train operators to reduce unnecessary movements and rapid movements.
FFU air supply cannot completely offset personnel disturbance, but the impact can be reduced through reasonable layout.
Packaging materials may introduce particles and microorganisms. Packaging materials may be contaminated by the environment during storage, handling and opening. If packaging materials enter directly into product exposure areas, they may introduce contaminants.
Management methods include: cleaning or replacing the outer packaging of packaging materials before entering the work station; keeping the packaging material storage area clean; avoiding the generation of particles when packaging materials are opened; keeping an appropriate distance between packaging materials and product exposure areas.
For food packaging, cleaning and storage management of packaging materials are part of quality control. FFU can provide clean air supply for the workstation environment, but it cannot replace the clean management of packaging materials.
Boundary management of open workstations is important. If there is no clear separation between the workstation and the surrounding area, external air and personnel may enter freely, affecting the FFU protection effect. If there is flow of materials and personnel between workstations, cross-contamination may occur.
Boundary management methods include: setting up partitions or soft curtains between work stations; stipulating the entry and exit paths of personnel; controlling the direction of material flow; and maintaining a certain clean area around the work stations. For workstations with higher protection requirements, you can consider adding an enclosure structure or a local clean cover.
If the workstation requires more complete enclosure and operating space, you can refer toClean Workbench Learn about other forms of local cleaning installations. If the workstation space is limited, you can refer toUltra-thin FFU and70mm ultra-thin EFU understands compact air supply solutions.
The FFU protection effect of the food packaging station should be verified in the actual production state, rather than only measured in the empty state. Verification content includes: wind speed and airflow direction at the location where the product is exposed; changes in airflow when personnel operate; changes in particles when packaging materials enter and exit; cleanliness around the workstation; and particle or microbial levels on the product surface.
Anemometers, particle counters or microbial sampling can be used for verification. If the protection is found to be insufficient, the FFU position, air supply direction or operation management method can be adjusted.
FFU requires regular maintenance, including filter replacement, fan inspection and seal inspection. Food workshops also have cleaning and disinfection requirements, and the FFU box and air outlet surface may need to be cleaned regularly. Care should be taken not to damage the filter or sealing structure when cleaning.
If wet cleaning is used in the workshop, the protection level of the FFU electrical components needs to be confirmed. If disinfectants are used, the compatibility of the box materials and seals with the disinfectant needs to be confirmed. For food workshops, it is recommended to choose an FFU structure with a flat surface and easy cleaning. Related material selection can refer toStainless Steel FFU understands the cleaning characteristics of stainless steel boxes.
During the design stage of the FFU solution for food packaging stations, it is recommended to confirm the following with the FFU manufacturer and food process side: product exposure area and exposure time; personnel operation methods and action ranges; packaging material management and entry and exit paths; station boundaries and surrounding environment; target cleanliness requirements and verification methods; FFU layout location and air supply direction; cleaning and disinfection methods and material compatibility; maintenance methods and cycles.

When using FFU at a food packaging station, the clean protection range needs to be managed around product exposure areas, personnel movements, packaging materials and work station boundaries. Filtered air supply is not a substitute for cleaning, personnel and material management in food production. Verification and routine maintenance under dynamic operation are important links to ensure the protection effect.
