Can an open workbench be used for hazardous materials operations?

Ordinary open clean workbench cannot be used directly for operating hazardous materials. Its design goal is to protect products, not to restrict the escape of dangerous substances. The front or sides of the work area are usually open, and airflow through the product may flow toward the operator or the surrounding environment. If operations involve infectious materials, hazardous dusts or vapors, clean air supply cannot replace dedicated protective facilities.

The following will start from the aspects of protection objects, release paths, types of hazardous materials, equipment selection, and change management.

First confirm the design goals of the workbench

The main task of an open clean bench is to provide local clean air and protect products or samples from particle contamination. It sends filtered air into the work area, allowing clean air to pass through the workpiece first.

It does not by default limit the escape of harmful aerosols, dusts or vapors generated during operations. If you are still unclear about the objects of workbench protection, you can read Does the clean workbench protect the product or the operator? , first confirm the device capability boundaries. The difference between workbench and biological safety cabinet, please refer to What are the boundaries between clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets?。

Open protected areas cannot be equated to quarantine areas

Just because the air enters the work area after passing through the filter does not mean that the pollution generated by the operation is safely collected. The front window and side openings of the open workbench are passages for operators’ arms to enter and exit, and are also paths through which contamination may escape.

Under certain airflow conditions, releases may also be carried towards the operator or the surrounding environment. Changing the wind speed does not compensate for the isolation function. The height of the front window of the workbench will affect the airflow boundary. For details, please refer to Will the height of the workbench front window affect the clean airflow? , but this is only a product protection parameter, not a personal protection indicator.

Identify the release path of hazardous materials

To determine whether an ordinary workbench can be used, you should first confirm the release method of dangerous substances during operation:

  • Whether aerosols, dust or splashes are generated;

  • Whether there are volatile solvents or harmful vapors;

  • Whether the dangerous substance is released for a short time or continuously;

  • Is the release location close to the operator or far away;

  • Whether the release will be carried by airflow to people or the environment.

This information determines what kind of engineered protection is required. Ordinary clean workbench cannot replace special exhaust, isolation or safety protection equipment.

Different dangerous objects require different protection conditions

Bioaerosols, volatile solvents and toxic dusts are controlled differently:

  • Bioaerosol : It is necessary to select the corresponding type of biosafety cabinet according to biosafety requirements;

  • Volatile solvents and harmful vapors : special exhaust or fume hood is required, HEPA cannot replace gas treatment;

  • Toxic dust : local capture or isolation is required to prevent the spread of dust;

  • Infectious materials : The protection level and operating procedures need to be selected based on risk assessment.

These devices are not interchangeable solely by appearance or cleanliness level. Biological safety cabinets also have different types and exhaust conditions. Not all models are suitable for volatile chemicals and need to be confirmed according to the applicable scope.

Applicable boundaries of safety cabinets and fume hoods

Biological safety cabinets undertake corresponding biological safety protection tasks according to their type and usage conditions. Fume hoods mainly remove harmful vapors, gases and dust to protect operators. The exhaust, installation and verification conditions of the two are different.

Before selection, the applicable operation of the equipment, on-site installation conditions and related performance confirmation should be confirmed. The cleanliness test report of the workbench shall not be used as proof of biosafety protection performance. Please refer to the specific boundaries What are the boundaries between clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets?。

You cannot modify an ordinary workbench by yourself

It is unsafe to use an ordinary workbench with an exhaust connection as a qualified protective device. The structure, airflow design and sealing method of the workbench are not designed for the collection of hazardous materials. Changing the exhaust air connection may change the air flow path, affect product protection, and cannot guarantee personnel protection.

When operating hazardous materials, corresponding equipment should be selected based on risk assessment instead of modifying it yourself. Relevant principles can be referred to How to plan clean air supply for closed equipment cavities? , but hazardous material handling needs to be designed separately according to safety requirements.

Change management: Process changes need to be re-evaluated

If the new process is changed from safety parts assembly to hazardous powder handling, the equipment should be reselected and not just replaced with a higher efficiency filter. Likewise, the original protection assessment may need to be updated if there are changes in what is being operated on, amounts used, or process conditions.

After product batch changes or process changes, particle fluctuations may be related to new materials. For details, please refer to How to troubleshoot particle fluctuations after product batch change? . When harmful substances are involved, safety boundaries should be confirmed before investigation.

The scope of verification should distinguish between product protection and personnel protection

Workbench acceptance typically focuses on airflow and particles on the benchtop or active work area, which are indicators of product protection. Personal protection and safety performance need to be confirmed separately based on the corresponding equipment type and usage conditions. Cleanliness test reports cannot be used as proof of personal protection performance.

The sampling point layout should cover the actual product exposure location, rather than just under the air supply outlet. Related methods can be found in Why can’t the sampling point be located just below the air supply outlet?。

Equipment selection and terminal matching

If it is confirmed after evaluation that the operating object is a safe material and only local product protection is required, please refer to Clean benches understand the different structures. Please refer to the room background air supply FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.

Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency?。

If multiple local devices need to be managed uniformly, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.

Project judgment example

An electronic assembly station originally operated safety parts on an open clean workbench. Later, the process was changed to deal with harmful powders. The original plan still used the workbench, only adding a higher efficiency filter. The assessment found that the workbench did not have a dedicated exhaust and isolation structure, and dust could escape into the operating area. Adjustment method: Use corresponding protective equipment instead, and design exhaust and treatment processes separately.

Another project handled common parts on an open bench, producing only a small amount of non-hazardous dust during the operation. The plan retains the workbench, but adds local collection and cleaning processes, and confirms that the background environment is controllable. Verify product protection and site environment after installation to confirm requirements are met.

These two situations illustrate that whether an open workbench can be used for hazardous materials operations depends on the type of hazardous materials and protective facilities. Safety functions cannot be supplemented by improving filter efficiency.

Aili industrial equipment supporting support

The open workbench is suitable for product protection and is not suitable for hazardous material operations. This sentence should be made clear during the selection stage. Aili Industry provides clean workbench, clean booth, clean screen and related air supply and filtration packages. It can check the effective protection area and filtration configuration of the workbench based on the operating objects, product exposure links and background conditions. When hazardous materials are involved, it is necessary to first determine the type of protective equipment, exhaust conditions and operating procedures according to safety requirements, and then consider the clean air supply package. Do not use particle level as a substitute for personnel safety evaluation. Specific equipment can be viewed Clean workbench , local air supply can be referred to FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the filtration package HEPA and ULPA filters。

Aili Industrial develops and manufactures FFU, EFU, HEPA/ULPA air filters, high-efficiency air supply vents, fan boxes and other clean air equipment. Relying on motors, fans, control systems, filters and complete machine supporting capabilities, we provide selection and customization support for clean room and production equipment projects.
