The difference between horizontal flow and vertical flow clean workbench is not just the air flow direction. They determine where the clean air passes first, what it may be blocked by, and how the operator's hand movements affect the protective boundary. Choosing the wrong airflow direction may cause the windward side of the workpiece to be contaminated, or a tall fixture may form a shadow area under the air supply surface.
When selecting, you should first confirm the safety boundary, and then compare the workpiece shape, fixture height, operating actions and background environment. The following will start with the safety boundary, airflow path, workpiece shielding, operating actions, front window and tabletop, and verification methods.
Ordinary clean workbench mainly protects products or samples and cannot be regarded as a protective barrier for operators or the environment. If the operation involves potentially infectious materials, hazardous chemicals, harmful dust or vapor, corresponding protective equipment should be selected according to the risk. The workbench should not be used for hazardous operations just because it has a nominal cleanliness level.
The two are not interchangeable solely by appearance or cleanliness level. Before selecting, the operational risks and objects that need to be protected should be confirmed. For specific differences, please refer to Does the clean workbench protect the product or the operator? and What are the boundaries between clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets?。
Horizontal flow workstations usually have filters located on the back or sides, and the airflow is blown horizontally toward the operator. The clean air first passes through the workpiece and then flows to the operator side. Its advantage is that the windward side of the workpiece is directly protected, but if items are placed on the windward side, the airflow may be blocked, leaving the workpiece partially in a weak protection zone.
The filter on a vertical flow workbench is usually located at the top, with the airflow flowing downward past the workpiece to the benchtop or return air structure. Its advantage is that it covers the table area more evenly, but if there are clamps, tools or arms above the workpiece, airflow shadows may be formed.
There is no absolute advantage or disadvantage between the two types of airflow. The key is whether the clean air first passes through the sensitive product, then passes through the pollution source, and finally is discharged. If you are still unclear about the choice between the whole room and partial solutions, you can first read How to choose between whole room purification and local purification , and then it depends on the air flow direction of the workbench.
The horizontal flow workbench is suitable for operations where the windward side is relatively open and the height of the workpiece does not block the airflow. If there are tall fixtures or tool racks behind the workpiece, this may block horizontal airflow, leaving the downstream area poorly protected.
The vertical flow workbench is suitable for table operation and low workpiece height. If the workpiece itself is very high, or there are mechanical structures, tool racks, and arms that frequently cross over it, the vertical air supply may be blocked, forming a weak protection zone behind the workpiece or under the fixture.
When making judgments, it is recommended to draw the maximum shape of the workpiece, height of the fixture, placement of tools, and range of motion of both hands on the layout diagram, and mark the locations where the airflow may be blocked. For the impact of stacking items on the workbench, please refer to Will stacking items on the workbench create a pollution dead zone?。
In a horizontal flow workbench, the operator's arms extend from the front, which may block part of the horizontal airflow. If the arm is positioned upstream of the workpiece, background air may be drawn toward the product. Vertical flow tables, where the arm spans over the workpiece, may also block downward airflow.
Verification should be carried out with the allowed number of personnel and actual operating actions, rather than just emptying the table. If you find that your arms are blocking the air supply path, you can refer to How will operating the arm interfere with the air supply to the workbench? , adjust tool layout or air supply direction.
Workbench front window height changes openings, external air exchange and operating space. Raising the front window may increase external interference, while lowering it may restrict movement or affect exits. Workbenches with different structures respond differently and cannot be judged solely by 'the smaller the opening, the better'.
If the front window is temporarily raised to load tall workpieces, check whether this condition is within the applicable range. Related analysis can refer to Will the height of the workbench front window affect the clean airflow?。
The size of the workbench surface should match the workpiece, fixtures, tools and operating paths, and leave space that does not block airflow. The usable area is not equal to the effective clean protection area. It should be selected based on the air outlet boundary and maintenance conditions, rather than just looking at the length and width of the desktop.
For specific judgment, please refer to How does the size of the workbench match the actual operation? . The shapes of effective protection zones for horizontal flow and vertical flow are different, and the table layout needs to be adjusted accordingly.
The air entering the workbench usually comes from the room in which it is located. If the background particle concentration in the room is high, or there are dust-generating processes nearby, direct air conditioning, or frequent personnel movement, the burden on the workbench filter will increase and the protection effect may be unstable.
When installing partial equipment in an ordinary factory building, the background conditions should be assessed first. Can refer to Can an ordinary factory building become a clean workshop by installing FFU? . If the workpiece is transported or temporarily stored outside the stage, appropriate air and material protection is still required. Relevant prerequisites can be found in What are the prerequisites for purifying only key workstations?。
The clean workbench mainly protects a limited work area and cannot directly replace the entire clean room. If the product is only exposed for a short time in a safe, non-hazardous process, the workbench solution can be evaluated; if the product is continuously exposed in multiple links, or there are requirements for background particles, temperature, humidity, and pressure difference, it is usually necessary to add partial protection to the entire clean room or background clean area.
For specific differences, please refer to Can a clean workbench replace an entire clean room? . For partial protection methods of open workstations, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation?。
The selection of horizontal flow and vertical flow must ultimately be confirmed through on-site verification. Suggestions include:
Air flow visualization, observe whether the air flow passes through the product first;
Measure wind speed and direction in the effective work area;
Observe protective boundaries during normal hand movements and tool removal;
Conduct particle detection according to the agreed particle size and sampling position;
Record the front window height, operating settings and material placement.
The sampling point layout should cover the actual product exposure location, rather than just under the air supply outlet. Related methods can be found in Why can’t the sampling point be located just below the air supply outlet? . The cleanliness level must indicate the particle size and state. For details, please refer to Why must the particle size be indicated in the cleanliness grade?。
If it is confirmed after assessment that local protection is needed, please refer to Clean benches understand the different structures. Please refer to the room background air supply FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency?。
If multiple local devices need to be managed uniformly, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.
The workpiece of a certain assembly station is long and the windward surface is wide, so the original plan uses a horizontal flow workbench. After installation, it was found that the tool rack on the windward side blocked the airflow and the workpiece was partially in a weak protection zone. Adjustment method: Remove the tool holder on the windward side, adjust the direction of the workpiece, and re-measure the wind speed in the effective area. Protection restored after adjustment.
The other workstation has lower workpieces and centralized operations. The original plan selected a vertical flow workbench. However, the clamp is higher and forms a shadow under the air supply surface. Adjustment method: lower the height of the fixture, adjust the position of the workpiece, and check the height of the front window. Airflow coverage restored after adjustment.
These two situations illustrate that the choice of horizontal flow and vertical flow must be comprehensively judged based on the shape of the workpiece, fixture shielding and operating actions, and cannot be determined solely based on habits or table size.
