What are the prerequisites for purifying only key workstations?

Only purifying key workstations may seem like a cost-effective and trouble-free solution, but it has clear prerequisites. If the product is continuously exposed in multiple links, or contamination is brought along the logistics path, local protection can only protect a short section, and problems may still occur in the front and rear links.

The core of local purification is not to 'fix whatever is dirty', but to first confirm whether the boundaries of sensitive links are clear, whether the front and rear transfers are controllable, and whether the background pollution is stable. Let’s start with several practical aspects.

First confirm sensitive links and protection boundaries

The first step in the purification of key workstations is to identify the true sensitivity of the product. Is it assembly, dispensing, inspection, or brief exposure before packaging? Different steps have different exposure times, operating methods and contamination risks, and the scope of protection is also different.

If you are not sure whether to do the whole room or just a part of it, you can check it out first. How to choose between whole room purification and local purification ? Clarify the selection logic at the program level, and then determine whether local protection is sufficient.

The protective boundary is not the entire work surface, but the small area where the product is actually exposed. Determining this area depends on the position of the workpiece, the range of movement of the operating arm and the way the tools are placed. If the boundary is drawn too large, equipment costs will increase; if it is drawn too small, protection may not be available at key locations.

Check exposure paths before and after work stations

Local purification can only protect the air in the workstation, but cannot eliminate contamination already attached to the product, nor can it replace material cleaning and packaging management.

Need to confirm: Has the workpiece been cleaned before entering the workstation? After the operation is completed, is it promptly closed or transferred to a protective container? Is it possible for dust to fall during caching and handling? If cleaned parts enter the assembly bench through an open channel and become dusty along the way, purging the assembly bench cannot remedy the situation. At this time, you can consider adding a transfer cover or adjusting the logistics method. Similar ideas are in Can a clean workbench replace an entire clean room? There are more detailed instructions here.

Local protection must respond to personnel and institutional actions

Under open or semi-open conditions, local air supply is easily disturbed by the movements of people and mechanisms. Stretching in the operating arm, picking up and placing tools, and moving the manipulator will change the direction of the local air flow and even suck the background air near the product.

The verification should be carried out with the allowed number of personnel and actual operating actions, rather than just emptying the table. If you find that your arms are blocking the air supply path, you can refer to How will operating the arm interfere with the air supply to the workbench? , adjust the tool layout or air supply direction.

Stacking items in the workstation may also create airflow dead spots. Tall boxes, risers, and dense fixtures can block the air supply and prevent clean air from covering the product. For specific judgment methods, please refer to Will stacking items on the workbench create a pollution dead zone? , build repeatable work layouts.

Control of background contamination and material transfer

The background environment of the local decontamination area is equally important. If the work station is located in an ordinary factory building, doors and windows are frequently opened, people move around frequently, and adjacent work stations generate dust, and local equipment needs to bear the additional burden of these pollution inputs. Please refer to the applicable boundaries for installing FFU in ordinary factory buildings. Can an ordinary factory building become a clean workshop by installing FFU?。

Material transfer is another weak link. If workpieces are moved between workstations in open containers, or if the tote itself collects dust, the effect of localized protection can be negated. It is recommended to mark personnel entrances, material entrances and high dust-producing processes on the floor plan, and check whether they are located upstream of the protected area.

Equipment selection and installation location

Common equipment for purifying key workstations include FFU, EFU and clean workbench.

The FFU is installed above the workstation, suitable for occasions with suspended ceilings or brackets. When selecting, check the size of the air outlet surface, air volume and external static pressure to ensure that the required air speed can be maintained at the height of the workstation. The FFU clean air supply product page has standard and customized plans.

EFUs are typically used inside equipment or in tight space locations. If the workstation is next to the equipment, or the space above it is limited, an EFU may be more suitable. The EFU equipment side fan filter unit page has instructions for different structures. The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.

Filter selection should correspond to the target particle size and cleanliness level. The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume.

If multiple local devices need to be managed uniformly, group control can be considered. The FFU group control system can configure operation strategies by region and time period to facilitate on-duty and troubleshooting.

The installation location should be away from obstructions and should be convenient for filter element replacement and maintenance. If the equipment is installed too high or too far inside, maintenance will be troublesome. Insufficient maintenance channels will increase subsequent expenditures. This is reflected in what later expenses will be increased due to insufficient maintenance channels . There is a more specific cost analysis in

Project judgment example

A certain electronics assembly station is only sensitive to particles during the dispensing process, and the front and rear processes are all closed for protection. The plan is to install an FFU above the dispensing station and add a transparent baffle on the side to reduce personnel interference. After installation, check the wind speed and coverage to confirm that the requirements are met.

The products of another project were continuously exposed in the three links of assembly, testing and packaging. The original plan was to only perform partial purification at the assembly station. As a result, there are still particle problems in the testing and packaging processes. Adjustment method: expand the protection scope, increase the background clean area, and set up closed transfer containers between work stations.

These two situations indicate that purification is only performed at key workstations, provided that the boundaries of sensitive links are clear, front and rear transfers are controllable, and background pollution is stable. Otherwise, it is necessary to expand the scope of protection or add connection measures.
