When equipment space is limited or old models are replaced, the filter area is often compressed. The overall dimensions remain unchanged, but the folding density of the filter element, the thickness of the filter material or the size of the windward surface become smaller, and the actual filtering area is reduced. Under the same air volume, the smaller the filtration area, the higher the headwind speed, and the greater the resistance. This will push the operating point of the fan to a higher pressure area, and the selection logic will also change accordingly.
If you only increase the motor or speed to compensate, it may cause problems with power, noise, sealing and filter material life. The following will start from the aspects of resistance change, working point offset, speed compensation, and space constraints.
Filter resistance is related to head wind speed. When the same air volume passes through a smaller filter area, the headwind speed increases, and the pressure drop on the filter material and structure increases. This resistance change will be directly reflected on the fan operating point.
Calculation of head-on wind speed requires the correct area diameter. The front area of the filter is different from the unfolded area of the folded filter material. For details, please refer to What will be the impact if the wind speed facing the filter is too high? and How should we look at the effective air outlet area of FFU? . If the area caliber is used incorrectly, the actual head wind speed may be underestimated.
On the given fan curve, the system resistance increases and the operating point moves toward high pressure and low air volume. In other words, when the filtration area is insufficient, the actual air volume may decrease even if the fan remains unchanged. If the project needs to maintain the original air volume, a fan with higher pressure or higher speed must be selected.
Please refer to the working point reading method Why should we look at the complete performance curve when selecting FFU? . If you only look at the maximum air volume or maximum pressure, you may not be able to judge the actual air supply capacity after the area is insufficient. The boundary of static pressure outside the machine can be referred to What does FFU external static pressure mean?。
When the air volume is insufficient, a common approach is to increase the fan speed. However, the increase in rotational speed will increase power and noise, and the pressure difference experienced by the filter will also be greater. If insufficient filtration area is the root cause, speed increase alone may lead to an inefficient operation zone.
When selecting the model, you should check the input power and noise range of the complete machine after speed adjustment to confirm that long-term operation is still within the allowable conditions of the equipment. For power data boundaries, please refer to What is the difference between FFU rated power and actual power consumption? . If multiple devices require zone duty and speed adjustment, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.
The impact of insufficient filtration area may not be obvious when the filter is new, but after dust accumulates on the filter, the resistance continues to rise, the working point further shifts, and the air volume decreases more significantly. When selecting the model, the operating points at the initial resistance and final resistance should be confirmed to ensure that the air volume can meet the requirements during the entire use cycle.
For specific judgment, please refer to What are the initial resistance and final resistance used to judge? . If you only select based on the new filter condition, the later operating pressure may be underestimated.
Insufficient filtering area causes the pressure difference to increase, and the load on the frame, sealing strips and installation interfaces also increases. If the sealing method is not checked simultaneously, bypass leakage may occur. At this time, even if the fan capacity is sufficient, the on-site particles may be abnormal.
For related troubleshooting, please refer to What particle problems can airflow short circuits cause? and What should be checked when cleaning equipment is accepted?。
When the filtration area is insufficient, fan selection can be adjusted in several directions:
Choose a higher static pressure model : provide sufficient pressure at the target air volume;
Adjust the working point : Optimize the operation settings on the premise of meeting the air volume of the workstation;
Increase the number of fans or spread the load : reduce the air volume of a single filter;
Optimize the air path : reduce additional resistance in air ducts, elbows and connecting parts;
Replace the filtration solution : increase the filtration area or reduce the resistance if space allows.
The selection cannot only be based on the motor power. The air volume, static pressure, power and noise at the target operating point should be checked. For the matching of filter rated air volume and actual operating air volume, please refer to How does the filter's rated air volume match the actual operating air volume?。
When space is limited, you can compare different filtering options:
Increase the filter depth, but not necessarily reduce the resistance. For details, please refer to Does increasing filter thickness definitely reduce resistance?;
Models with larger upwind size or more filter elements;
Optimize the folding structure of the filter element to reduce resistance;
Distribute air supply units to reduce the filtering load of a single unit;
Rearrange the airflow path according to the internal space of the equipment.
When it comes to internal protection of equipment, please refer to How to plan clean air supply for closed equipment cavities? , first confirm the cavity boundary and air flow path, and then determine the filtration and fan scheme.
When the filtration area is insufficient, upgrading the filtration level will further increase the resistance. The resistance of H13, H14 and U15 may be different under the same air volume, and the selection needs to be combined with the fan capacity. For details, please refer to How to choose between H13, H14 and U15? and How do HEPA and ULPA match cleanliness goals?。
If the on-site particles are abnormal but the filter efficiency is acceptable, the sealing and airflow should be prioritized instead of continuing to upgrade the filter. Related analysis can refer to Does higher filtration efficiency necessarily lead to improved site ratings?。
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume.
Please refer to the room background air supply FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
If ceiling installation is involved, please refer to How does the FFU appearance size match the ceiling module? , confirm the installation space and maintenance access. Insufficient maintenance channels will increase subsequent expenditures. This is reflected in what later expenses will be increased due to insufficient maintenance channels . There is a more detailed analysis of
The cover size of a certain equipment is fixed, and the original plan uses a small-area filter. After installation, the air volume is insufficient. The fan speed was adjusted to the highest value on site, but the air volume was still low and the noise and power increased significantly. The investigation found that insufficient filter area resulted in excessive headwind speed and resistance. Adjustment method: Switch to a model with a larger filter area and adjust the fan working point. The air volume and noise are restored after adjustment.
After another project replaced a high-efficiency filter, the filter area remained unchanged, the resistance increased, the original fan working point shifted, and the air volume decreased. Adjustment method: Check the working point under the initial resistance of the new filter, select a higher static pressure model and optimize the air path. After adjustment, the air volume and filtration efficiency are both satisfied.
These two situations illustrate that insufficient filtration area will change the system resistance and fan operating point. When selecting, the filtration area and structure should be optimized first, and then the fan capacity should be checked.

When the filtration area is insufficient, the fan selection should not only look at the increase in power, but also the filter area, head wind speed, initial and final resistance and fan curve. Aili Industrial has collaborative capabilities in air filter manufacturing, independent research and development of fans, motors, control systems, and complete machine assembly. It can compare different filter areas, filter material structures, and fan working point combinations based on equipment space and target air volume to help determine whether to change to a model with a larger filter area, adjust the fan static pressure, or redistribute the air path to avoid power and noise problems caused by simple compensation by increasing the motor.
