This issue is often overlooked when purchasing a clean workbench. When many projects see the word 'clean', they assume that it can protect both products and personnel. But the main task of an ordinary clean workbench is to protect products. It delivers filtered air to the work area to prevent products from being contaminated by particles. It does not default to limiting the escape of harmful aerosols, dusts or vapors generated during operations, nor does it replace the personnel protection functions of biological safety cabinets or fume hoods.
If the operation involves hazardous materials, the protection objects and risk types must be confirmed before selection. Mixing product protection and personnel protection may result in incorrect equipment selection or unclear safety boundaries. The following will start from the aspects of protection objects, air flow direction, types of dangerous objects, and equipment differences.
The design goal of a clean workbench is to allow filtered air to pass through the product or sample before leaving the work area. It protects the particle cleanliness of the workpiece surface, not the air inhaled by the operator.
Inside the workbench, the air passes through a HEPA or ULPA filter and is sent into the work area. If it is a horizontal flow, the airflow is blown from back to front towards the operator; if it is a vertical flow, the airflow is from the top down past the workpiece. Both structures are designed to protect workpieces rather than collect hazardous materials released during operations.
If you are still unclear about the difference between horizontal flow and vertical flow workbenches, you can read How to choose between horizontal flow and vertical flow clean workbench? , first understand the impact of airflow direction on the protection range.
The workstation filters the air entering the protected area but cannot be relied upon to capture harmful aerosols or vapors released during operations. HEPA mainly targets particles and cannot replace the treatment of harmful gases; ordinary workbenches do not have special exhaust or negative pressure structures to limit the escape of hazardous materials.
If the operation involves volatile solvents, toxic dusts or infectious materials, corresponding types of protective equipment should be selected, and exhaust, filtration and personnel protection conditions should be confirmed. Equipment selection cannot be judged solely by 'cleanliness level'. Please refer to the specific boundaries. What are the boundaries between clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets?。
Before selection, you should clarify:
Whether the operation object is ordinary parts or hazardous materials;
Is it products, people or the environment that need to be protected?
Are there aerosol, dust, vapor or biological risks;
Whether exhaust, negative pressure or chemical filtration is required;
Whether the operation is allowed in the workbench.
Product cleanliness requirements and personnel protection requirements should be listed separately. The protective function cannot be supplemented by increasing the filter level, nor can an ordinary workbench be used as a biological safety cabinet or fume hood.
Different devices have different functional boundaries:
Clean workbench : focusing on product protection and providing local clean air;
Biological safety cabinet : undertakes corresponding biological safety protection tasks according to type, involving personnel and environmental protection;
Fume hood : mainly removes harmful vapors, gases and dust to protect operators;
Ultra-clean workbench : usually refers to a clean workbench focusing on product protection.
These devices are not interchangeable solely by appearance or cleanliness level. Biological safety cabinets also have different types and exhaust conditions. Not all models are suitable for volatile chemicals and need to be confirmed according to the applicable scope. For specific differences, please refer to What are the boundaries between clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets?。
Even for product protection, the effective range of the workbench is limited. Countertop size, front window height, operating movements and object placement all affect the protective boundary. When workpieces are transported or temporarily stored outside the stage, they still need corresponding air and material protection.
The size of the workbench matches the operation, please refer to How does the size of the workbench match the actual operation? . For the influence of the height of the front window, please refer to Will the height of the workbench front window affect the clean airflow? . When workpiece transfer protection is insufficient, please refer to What are the prerequisites for purifying only key workstations?。
If operations involve hazardous materials, the following principles should be followed:
Conduct a risk assessment first to clarify the types of hazardous materials and exposure routes;
Choose corresponding protective equipment based on risk, rather than ordinary clean workbench;
Confirm equipment exhaust, filtration and installation conditions;
Operator training and protective equipment cannot be omitted;
You cannot convert an ordinary workbench to an exhaust system and use it as a qualified protective device.
Clean air supply cannot replace special exhaust, isolation or safety protection equipment. Please refer to relevant plans How to plan clean air supply for closed equipment cavities? , but hazardous material handling needs to be designed separately according to safety requirements.
Workbench acceptance typically focuses on airflow and particles on the benchtop or active work area, which are indicators of product protection. Personal protection and safety performance need to be confirmed separately based on the corresponding equipment type and usage conditions. Cleanliness test reports cannot be used as proof of personal protection performance.
The sampling point layout should cover the actual product exposure location, rather than just under the air supply outlet. Related methods can be found in Why can’t the sampling point be located just below the air supply outlet? . The cleanliness level must indicate the particle size and state. For details, please refer to Why must the particle size be indicated in the cleanliness grade?。
The clean workbench mainly protects a limited work area and cannot directly replace the entire clean room. If the product is only exposed for a short time in a safe, non-hazardous process, the workbench solution can be evaluated; if the product is continuously exposed in multiple links, or there are requirements for background particles, temperature, humidity, and pressure difference, it is usually necessary to add partial protection to the entire clean room or background clean area.
For specific differences, please refer to Can a clean workbench replace an entire clean room? . For local protection methods of open workstations, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation?。
If after evaluation it is confirmed that topical product protection is required, please refer to Clean benches understand the different structures. Please refer to the room background air supply FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency?。
If multiple local devices need to be managed uniformly, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.
An electronics assembly station needs to protect precision parts from particle contamination and operates on common materials. The plan is to use a clean workbench, focusing on checking the airflow on the workbench and the protection range of the workpiece. After installation, verify the product protection effect to confirm that it meets the requirements.
Another project planned to handle hazardous powders in a clean bench. The assessment found that the workbench did not have special personnel protection and ventilation structures, which could not limit the escape of dust. Adjustment method: Use corresponding protective equipment instead, and design the exhaust and treatment processes separately instead of installing filters on ordinary workbench.
These two situations illustrate that the clean workbench mainly protects products. When hazardous materials are involved, corresponding equipment should be selected according to risks. The product protection function cannot be regarded as personal protection.

The clean workbench protects the product, not the operator. This sentence should be confirmed clearly during the selection stage. Aili Industry provides clean workbench, clean booth, clean screen and related air supply and filtration packages. It can check the effective protection area and filtration configuration of the workbench based on the operating objects, product exposure links and background conditions. When hazardous materials are involved, the type of protective equipment needs to be determined according to safety requirements first, and then the clean air supply package should be considered. Particle levels should not be used as a substitute for personnel safety evaluation.
