Clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets have similar appearances. They both have filters and work areas, but they have clear boundaries in terms of protected objects, airflow structure and applicable operations. Using a clean workbench as a biosafety cabinet may expose operators and the environment to risks; using a biosafety cabinet only as a clean bench may ignore exhaust, installation and verification conditions.
Before selecting, you should first confirm the operating objects, risk types and objects that need to be protected, and then decide on the equipment type. The following will focus on the protection objects, airflow structure, risk types, exhaust conditions, and verification methods.
Clean benches primarily aim at product protection. It delivers filtered air into the work area, protecting products or samples from particle contamination. It does not by default limit the escape of harmful aerosols, dusts or vapors generated during operations.
Biological safety cabinets undertake corresponding biological safety protection tasks according to their type and usage conditions, involving different combinations of protection of personnel, environment and products. The protection scope and exhaust conditions of level 1, level 2, and level 3 safety cabinets are different, and not all models are suitable for volatile chemicals.
If you are not clear about the main protection products of clean workbench, you can read Does the clean workbench protect the product or the operator? , first confirm the capability boundaries of the workbench. When working with hazardous materials, refer to Can an open workbench be used for hazardous materials operations? , do a risk assessment first.
There are two common structures of horizontal flow and vertical flow in clean workbench. The horizontal flow blows toward the operator from back to front, and the vertical flow flows from the top down past the workpiece. The common goal of both is to move clean air past the product first, rather than collecting hazardous materials.
Biological safety cabinets usually use directional airflow and negative pressure structures to form a protective barrier for personnel and the environment through a combination of air inlet, downdraft and exhaust. Different models have different exhaust ratios and circulation methods, which need to be confirmed according to the equipment data.
The airflow targets of the two devices are different, so just because they have a HEPA filter does not mean they are functionally equivalent. For the selection of horizontal flow and vertical flow workbench, please refer to How to choose between horizontal flow and vertical flow clean workbench? , first understand the impact of airflow direction on the protection range.
Ordinary clean workbenches should not be used directly for hazardous material operations. The following situations require special caution:
Potentially infectious materials or bioaerosols;
Toxic dust or respirable particles;
Volatile solvents, harmful vapors;
Operations that may generate hazardous aerosols.
These operations require corresponding protective equipment selected according to risk. Clean air supply cannot replace dedicated exhaust, isolation or safety protection. HEPA mainly targets particles and cannot replace harmful gas treatment.
Biological safety cabinets usually have requirements for exhaust, installation location, and room airflow. The exhaust duct, supply air conditions and installation spacing will affect the protective effect of the safety cabinet. After installation, on-site confirmation is required according to equipment requirements.
Clean workbench generally does not require dedicated exhaust, but the air intake comes from the room where it is located, and the background particle concentration and lateral airflow will affect the protection effect. When installing partial equipment in an ordinary factory building, you should first evaluate the background conditions. You can refer to Can an ordinary factory building become a clean workshop by installing FFU?。
Validation of clean benches typically focuses on work area airflow and particles, which are indicators of product protection. The protective performance of biological safety cabinets needs to be confirmed according to the corresponding type and usage conditions, and the cleanliness test report cannot be used to replace the biological safety protection performance certificate.
If the on-site particles are abnormal but the equipment is running normally, it should be distinguished whether it is a product protection problem or a personnel protection problem. The sampling point layout should cover the actual product exposure location, rather than just under the air supply outlet. Related methods can be found in Why can’t the sampling point be located just below the air supply outlet?。
Use the clean workbench as a biological safety cabinet;
Consider all biological safety cabinets suitable for volatile chemicals;
Only the appearance and cleanliness level are compared, and the exhaust and installation conditions are not checked;
Replacing safety precaution verification with cleanliness reports;
Installing an exhaust on an ordinary workbench will serve as a qualified protective device.
These practices may result in incorrect equipment selection or unclear security boundaries.
The clean workbench mainly protects a limited work area and cannot directly replace the entire clean room. If the product is only exposed for a short time in a safe, non-hazardous process, the workbench solution can be evaluated; if the product is continuously exposed in multiple links, or there are requirements for background particles, temperature, humidity, and pressure difference, it is usually necessary to add partial protection to the entire clean room or background clean area.
For specific differences, please refer to Can a clean workbench replace an entire clean room? . For local protection methods of open workstations, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation?。
If after evaluation it is confirmed that topical product protection is required, please refer to Clean benches understand the different structures. Please refer to the room background air supply FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency?。
If multiple local devices need to be managed uniformly, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.
An electronics assembly station needs to protect precision parts from particle contamination and operates on common materials. The plan is to use a clean workbench, focusing on checking the airflow on the workbench and the protection range of the workpiece. After installation, verify the product protection effect to confirm that it meets the requirements.
Another project planned to handle potentially infectious samples in a clean bench. The assessment found that the workbench did not have a protective structure for people and the environment, and could not limit the escape of aerosols. Adjustment method: Switch to the corresponding type of biological safety cabinet, and confirm the exhaust, installation and verification conditions separately, instead of adding a filter to the ordinary workbench.
These two situations illustrate that clean workbenches and biological safety cabinets have clear boundaries of use, and operational risks and objects that need to be protected must be confirmed before selection.

The boundaries between clean workbench and biological safety cabinet must be confirmed clearly during the selection stage. Aili Industry provides clean workbench, clean booth, clean screen and related air supply and filtration packages. It can check the effective protection area and filtration configuration of the workbench based on the operating objects, product exposure links and background conditions. When biosecurity or hazardous materials are involved, it is necessary to first determine the type of protective equipment and exhaust conditions according to safety requirements, and then consider the clean air supply package. Do not use particle level as a substitute for personnel safety evaluation.
