When EFU communication is interrupted and the equipment is running, the performance is often very quiet: the polling data of the PLC is suddenly interrupted, and the speed feedback of a certain EFU or a certain group of EFU is no longer updated, but the fan may still be rotating according to the last command. The operator may not be able to discover it immediately, and will not go back to investigate until the cleanliness is abnormal or product defects appear. The difficulty in handling communication interruptions is not 'whether it can be repaired', but what the system should do at the moment the interruption occurs - whether to continue running according to the last instruction, slow down to a safe value, or directly shut down and alarm. This judgment depends on the preset timeout action of the EFU controller, the current process stage of the equipment, and how long the cleanliness of the area can be maintained after the EFU stops. Aili Industrial's 70mm ultra-thin EFU supports RS485/Modbus communication. The controller's communication timeout action and fault feedback method can be configured according to the equipment requirements in the confirmation diagram.
The first determining factor of whether to shut down after EFU communication is interrupted is the communication loss action setting of the controller itself. Industrial inverters and controllers usually provide several optional strategies: maintain the final speed, switch to a preset safe speed, trip and shut down due to fault, or only alarm without shutting down. If the EFU controller uses similar logic, confirm that the current configuration needs to be marked in the diagram. If 'maintain final speed' is set, the fan will continue to run if communication is interrupted, and the cleanliness will not be affected in the short term. However, the PLC has lost control of the EFU. If the speed needs to be adjusted or stopped later, the command cannot be sent. If 'fault trip' is set, the fan will stop immediately when communication is interrupted, and the cleanliness may be out of control in an instant.
The second determining factor is what stage the equipment process is at. When wafers are being transported within the EFEM, the bonding station is operating, or the equipment is in idle standby mode, the tolerance for continuous EFU operation is completely different. A more pragmatic approach is to connect the communication interruption alarm to the equipment PLC, and the PLC will judge based on the process rhythm: communication interruption can only alarm when idle and wait for the maintenance window to be processed; when key processes are in progress, a speed reduction or backup EFU is triggered to avoid a cleanliness cliff. After a communication interruption occurs, if you only remember 'EFU communication failure', subsequent troubleshooting will basically rely on guesswork. Available fault records contain at least four types of information: occurrence time and duration (whether it is instantaneous packet loss or continuous disconnection), affected EFU address and partition (single unit or entire group), operating parameters before the interruption (last speed command, actual speed, power or current reading), changes in controller diagnostic counters (CRC error count, whether received packet count stops increasing). This information can distinguish between 'bus physical layer problems' and 'problems with a certain EFU controller itself'.
For EFUs that support Modbus, the controller usually has diagnostic registers such as received packet count, CRC error count, etc. During the debugging phase, these register addresses should be written into the point table of the PLC and presented in the form of trends or counts on the HMI or maintenance interface. These counts continue to increase when communication is normal. When interrupted, the received packet count stops and the CRC error count may increase. What the maintenance personnel see is not just an alarm bit, but they can determine whether 'a certain segment of the bus is broken' or 'interference caused the verification to fail.' The register address table of the Aili Industrial EFU controller is provided with the confirmation diagram. The reading method of the diagnostic register is checked one by one during the debugging stage.
To troubleshoot communication interruptions, it is recommended to proceed in the order of physical layer → parameters → controller, rather than suspecting the program first.
The first step is the physical layer . Check whether the RS485 wiring is loose, whether the A/B polarity is reversed, and whether the bus terminal resistance matches. Vibration from equipment operation can cause terminals to loosen, which is a common cause of intermittent communication. If multiple EFUs are offline at the same time, check the starting point and terminal resistance of the bus first; if only a single EFU is offline, check the wiring and address conflicts of the node. The second step is communication parameters . Whether the baud rate, parity bit, and slave address are consistent with the PLC, and whether the address has been reset after replacing the EFU or controller. The third step is the controller itself . If the physical layer and parameters are normal, but the EFU continues to not respond, the controller communication port may be faulty and needs to be confirmed by replacement. Regarding the wiring topology and debugging sequence of zone control, please refer toHow to implement EFU partition control? wiring, parameters, control logic and debugging methods .Single machine → partition → linkage steps in
The prevention of EFU communication interruption is more cost-effective than the post-interruption processing. There are three executable maintenance actions: daily inspection to check the disconnection count , adding an 'EFU communication status' column to the equipment maintenance record to record whether there is an EFU disconnection on that day, the number of disconnections and its address; regularly checking the bus physical connection , vibration and temperature during equipment operation Changes will gradually loosen the terminals. Checking the tightening status of the RS485 terminals quarterly is more efficient than troubleshooting after a fault; check the address after replacing the EFU . If the slave address is not set according to the original table when replacing spare parts, there will be an address conflict or the new EFU will not be recognized by the PLC after it goes online. Aili Industrial can provide address allocation tables according to equipment partitions when supplying EFU. The spare EFU is preset at the original address before leaving the factory, reducing the configuration process after replacement.
It should be avoided to default to shutdown as the only correct action once communication is interrupted, and shutdown decisions should be combined with controller timeout settings and process stages; fault records should be avoided to only record alarms but not diagnostic counters. Without count changes, physical layer problems and controller problems cannot be distinguished; continued operation without checking the address after communication is restored should be avoided, as address conflicts may cause instructions to be sent to the wrong EFU; bundling of communication lines and power lines should be avoided, as the inverter or motor cable inside the equipment may interfere with the RS485 signal. The core of EFU communication interruption processing is not to 'connect the line back', but to have a basis for shutdown judgment, traceable fault records, and maintenance actions to prevent recurrence.
The EFU communication is disconnected and the fan is still running. Do you want to stop it immediately?
Look at the controller configuration and process status. If the controller is set to 'maintain final speed', the fan will continue to rotate and the cleanliness will not be affected in the short term. You can wait for the end of the current process section to process. If the equipment is in a critical process and the PLC has lost control of the EFU, it is recommended to stop for inspection at the earliest time allowed by the process rather than waiting until the product is abnormal. Shutdown judgment should be made by the equipment PLC combined with the process rhythm, rather than relying solely on communication alarm bits.
When communication is restored after being interrupted, does the EFU need to be reset?
Depends on whether the controller is powered down or reset during the interruption. If only the bus is disconnected and the controller continues to be powered, just restore the wiring and communicate according to the original address. If the controller is powered off and restarted during an interruption, the address and parameters may return to the default values and need to be rechecked according to the address table. It is recommended to confirm the slave address and speed setting one by one after replacing or restarting the EFU.
How to determine whether it is a bus problem or a problem with a certain EFU?
Look at the scope of influence. If all the EFUs on the entire bus are offline, check the bus starting point, terminal resistor and PLC port; if only one or a few units are offline on the same bus, check whether the node's wiring and address conflict, and whether the controller communication port is normal. Use the replacement method to replace the suspected faulty EFU to a known normal node. If the fault follows the EFU, it is an EFU controller problem; if the fault remains in its original location, it is a bus or wiring problem.
