What does the EFU controller do? Speed regulation, communication, linkage and exception handling

In the eyes of many people, the EFU controller is just a speed control box: connect the power supply, twist the knob, and start the fan, and the task seems to be completed. But the controller of the device-side EFU is much more than that. It must accurately change the fan speed when the equipment PLC issues instructions, be polled as an addressable node on the RS485 bus, start in advance before the wafer enters the work area, delay shutdown after the process is completed, and take protective action when the motor overheats or communication is interrupted instead of striking directly. Only by taking apart these four layers of functions can we judge whether an EFU controller is 'sufficient' or 'unusable'. Aili Industrial's 70mm ultra-thin EFU is equipped with a self-developed control scheme that supports RS485/Modbus communication and speed adjustment instructions. The control logic can be configured according to equipment partitions and rhythm.

Speed adjustment: not just turning faster or slower

The core of the speed adjustment function of the EFU controller is to allow the fan to operate stably at the target operating point, rather than simply 'high and low'. The speed regulation methods of EFU on the equipment side usually include voltage regulation and frequency conversion. The voltage regulation method adjusts the speed by changing the motor input voltage. It has a simple circuit and low cost, but the efficiency decreases and the torque is insufficient at low speeds. The frequency conversion method regulates speed by changing the drive frequency. It has a wider range and better smoothness, and is suitable for equipment-side scenarios that require a wide speed regulation range or frequent speed changes.

The accuracy and stability of speed regulation need to be confirmed more than the speed regulation range. Whether the command received by the controller is a 0-10V analog value or a Modbus write register, the corresponding range mapping relationship must be clear. Whether the written value '50' corresponds to 50% rotation speed or a fixed wind speed value must be written clearly in the register table. If the mapping relationship is unclear and the equipment PLC outputs at 50%, the EFU actually reaches 70%, and the air volume deviates from the design value. Aili Industrial's EFU control scheme marks the speed regulation mapping relationship in the confirmation diagram, and the equipment manufacturer can back-calculate the command value according to the target wind speed instead of going to the site to adjust based on experience.

Communication: Addressable nodes on the bus

The role of the EFU controller at the communication level is to make each EFU an independently addressable slave station on the RS485/Modbus bus. The equipment PLC reads and writes the register of each EFU through the slave address to realize start and stop control, speed setting and status reading. Adjacent EFU controllers are connected in series through RS485 communication lines, and the last one is connected to a PLC or gateway to form a hand-in-hand topology.

Whether the communication function is 'available' depends on three details. Whether the address is configurable : Each EFU requires a unique slave address. If the address cannot be changed or can only be factory set during batch deployment, the original address table will be disrupted when the EFU is replaced. Whether the register table is provided with the product : For controllers that only write 'Support Modbus' and do not provide a point table, the integration phase will consume a lot of time in guessing the register address. Whether the status feedback is complete : The PLC needs to read the actual speed, operating status and fault code. If the EFU only accepts instructions and does not return the status, the linkage becomes an open loop. The register address table and wiring definition of the Aili Industrial EFU controller are provided with the complete machine confirmation diagram, which facilitates the completion of point table connection during the electrical design stage of the equipment.

Linkage: Action according to the beat of the device

The linkage function of the EFU controller is reflected in the timing cooperation between it and the device main control. The process rhythm of advanced packaging equipment or cleaning equipment requires that the EFU has established a stable laminar flow before the wafer enters the work area, and delays the operation for a period of time before shutting down after the process is completed to avoid the spread of residual particles. These sequential logics are usually controlled by the equipment PLC, and the EFU controller is responsible for executing start, stop and speed adjustment instructions.

Another level of linkage is partition control. The EFU groups divided into clean areas inside the equipment need to respond to different start, stop and speed adjustment commands respectively. The controller is segmented according to the zone address, and the start and stop of the EFU in zone A will not accidentally trigger zone B. If the equipment process requires different areas to maintain different wind speeds, the controller needs to support writing set values separately by address instead of a global parameter. For the wiring and debugging sequence of zone control, please refer toHow to implement EFU partition control? Wiring, parameters, control logic and debugging methods are explained.

Exception handling: protection actions must be predictable

The exception handling function of the EFU controller determines whether the system is 'orderly degraded' or 'suddenly out of control' when a fault occurs. Common abnormalities include motor overheating, communication interruption, speed deviation from set value and power supply abnormality.

Motor overheating protection usually involves the controller monitoring the motor temperature or current, and taking action to slow down or stop when it exceeds the threshold. The speed-down strategy is especially critical for equipment-side applications: if the EFU shuts down directly due to overheating, the air supply volume instantly returns to zero, and the cleanliness inside the equipment immediately goes out of control; if the controller first slows down the operation and outputs an alarm, the equipment PLC has time to adjust the process rhythm or prompt for maintenance. The handling method of communication interruption also needs to be confirmed in the controller parameters: whether to maintain the last speed, switch to a safe speed, or shut down and alarm. Different choices correspond to different equipment risks, which need to be verified together with the logic of the equipment PLC during the debugging phase. How to create executable controller check results

First confirm the communication protocol of the equipment PLC (Modbus RTU or other), the number of partitions and the number of EFU units in each area, and then ask the supplier to provide the controller's speed adjustment mapping table, register address table, abnormal protection action description and wiring definition. Include the speed regulation method (voltage regulation/frequency conversion), communication parameters, linkage timing and exception handling strategies in the supplementary list. The confirmed controller configuration corresponds to the BOM of the complete machine. Fuzzy descriptions such as 'supports speed adjustment' cannot be used to replace the executable point table. Aili Industrial's EFU control scheme can be configured with speed regulation methods and communication parameters according to the equipment drawings. The control logic and abnormal protection actions are marked in the confirmation diagram. During the prototype stage, the address and status feedback are verified one by one and then the batch configuration is solidified.

Misunderstandings to avoid

It should be avoided to equate the controller with a speed control knob and ignore the communication and exception handling functions. It should be avoided to only confirm 'Modbus support' without checking the register table and address compatibility. It should be avoided to only set up shutdown for abnormal protection without evaluating the impact on cleanliness. It should be avoided to solidify the linkage sequence in the prototype stage without running the complete process cycle. The core function of the EFU controller is not to 'make the fan rotate', but to form a verifiable and debuggable closed loop under the actual operating conditions of the equipment through speed regulation, communication, linkage and exception handling.

Related questions and answers

What is the difference between EFU controller and ordinary speed regulator?
Ordinary speed regulators only change the output voltage or frequency. The EFU controller also needs to support RS485/Modbus communication, slave address configuration, status feedback output and abnormal protection logic. The controller of the equipment-side EFU must be addressable and readable by the PLC, not just manual speed adjustment.

The controller supports Modbus, but the device PLC cannot read the data. Where can I check?
First confirm three things: whether the slave address is consistent with the PLC program, whether the baud rate and check digit match, and whether the register address table is read and written according to the point table provided by the supplier. If the parameters are correct but communication is intermittent, check the RS485 wiring polarity and bus terminal resistance.

When the EFU overheats, the controller slows down, but the device does not receive an alarm. What should I do?
Check the controller's alarm output mode: dry contact output or setting via Modbus register. If the equipment PLC only reads the speed and not the fault register, the speed reduction action may be ignored. During debugging, you should verify whether the fault status can be correctly read by the PLC one by one, and set alarm prompts in the logic.
