When the EFU power is abnormal, most people's first reaction is that the motor is broken. However, the power of the equipment-side EFU deviates from the design value. The more common reasons are other than the motor: the filter resistance increases after dust accumulation, and the fan is forced to increase the speed in order to maintain the set air volume, and the current and power increase accordingly; the air inlet or return air path is blocked, the fan operates under higher back pressure, and the power consumption is also abnormal. Power anomalies are a result, not a cause. The correct order to deal with it is to first distinguish 'power increase' or 'power decrease', and then check it layer by layer in the order of air path → filter → electrical → motor, instead of directly disassembling the motor. Aili Industrial's EFU manufacturing system covers motors, fans, filters and self-developed controls. Power-related parameters can be checked according to the confirmation diagram in the same system. There is no need to go back and forth between component suppliers to confirm responsibilities during troubleshooting.
If the EFU power is abnormal, you must first look at the direction. An increase in power usually points to a larger load: clogged filters, blocked air ducts, worn bearings, or high voltage. Power reduction is more likely to indicate insufficient output: motor winding abnormalities, capacitor aging, speed control signal errors, or low power supply voltage. The two lines have completely different starting points for inspection.

If the EFU has a power or current monitoring function, first retrieve the operating records before and after the abnormality to confirm whether the abnormality occurs in a step manner (which may correspond to a sudden blockage of the filter or loose wiring) or a gradual occurrence (corresponding to the gradual accumulation of dust on the filter or the gradual wear of the bearings). Trends are more diagnostic than single point values.
Before removing any electrical components, make sure the air path is clear. The power consumption of the EFU is directly related to the system resistance. After the HEPA/ULPA filter accumulates dust, the pressure difference rises. The fan will automatically increase speed and power in constant air volume control mode. If the EFU adopts constant speed control, filter blockage will not be manifested as an increase in power, but as a decrease in air volume - at this time, the power may be normal, but the cleaning capacity has deviated.
Inspection actions: Read the pressure difference between the front and rear of the filter and compare it with the initial installation value or replacement threshold; check whether there are foreign objects, obstructions or seal loss in the air inlet and return air path; confirm that the filter is installed in the correct direction and that the frame is sealed without bypass. Aili Industrial marked the filter pressure difference replacement threshold according to the confirmation diagram in the EFU supply, making it easier for operation and maintenance personnel to compare power changes and filter status on the same record sheet.
After confirming that the air path is normal, check the electrical side. The deviation of the supply voltage from the rated value will directly affect the power: when the voltage is high, the motor current increases and the power rises; when the voltage is low, the motor may have abnormal current due to insufficient torque, and the power performance may decrease or fluctuate. At the same time, confirm whether the wiring terminals are loose, whether the power wire diameter matches, and whether the leakage protector is normal. For EFU that supports speed regulation, it is also necessary to check whether the control signal: 0-10V or Modbus command is consistent with the set value, and whether there is an abnormality issued by the host computer that causes the fan to run at full load for a long time.
One point that is easily overlooked is multiple EFUs share the power supply . the mutual influence when If other equipment on the same circuit starts and stops frequently, voltage fluctuations may cause periodic abnormalities in the EFU's power readings. When troubleshooting, the power should be recorded under two conditions: EFU running alone and the system running as a whole, to distinguish between 'EFU's own problems' and 'power supply environment problems'.
If the air path and electrical circuit are normal but the power abnormality still exists, check the motor body again. Bearing wear will increase mechanical resistance, leading to an increase in power accompanied by abnormal noise or temperature rise; partial short circuit of the motor winding or aging of the capacitor may lead to reduced power or instability. To judge the bearing status, you can manually turn the impeller to feel whether the resistance is uniform, or use infrared temperature measurement to compare the motor housing temperature with historical values. Aili Industrial's ultra-thin EFU uses a customized brushless DC motor and dynamically balanced impeller. The matching of the motor and impeller is completed in the factory. When troubleshooting power abnormalities, the power and current benchmark values under rated operating conditions can be retrieved from the complete machine confirmation diagram as a basis for comparison.

The best way to deal with EFU power abnormalities is to prevent them from occurring in sudden situations. There are three executable methods: record the baseline value - record the power, current and speed under rated operating conditions when the new machine is put into operation, as a benchmark for subsequent comparisons; incorporate the pressure difference into daily inspections - the rise in filter pressure difference is a precursor signal for power increase, replace the filter based on the pressure difference rather than a fixed time; focus on gradients rather than jumps - a small increase in power month by month usually corresponds to dust accumulation on the filter or bearing wear, and there is enough time to arrange maintenance; if there is a sudden power jump, the machine should be stopped immediately to check the wiring or power supply.
For equipment-side applications that deploy EFU in batches, a column of 'EFU power/current' can be added to the equipment maintenance record, alongside wind speed, pressure difference and noise records. Aili Industrial's EFU control solution supports RS485/Modbus to read operating parameters, which facilitates equipment manufacturers to integrate power data into the equipment maintenance system and trigger inspections in advance when the power deviates from the reference value, instead of waiting until the motor overheating protection is activated to discover the problem.
You should avoid dismantling the motor as soon as the power is abnormal. Problems with air ducts and filters are more common than with motors. You should avoid looking at single-point power values without looking at trends. Gradient changes and jumps point to different causes. You should avoid adjusting speed control parameters without confirming the filter pressure difference, which may conceal the real blockage problem. You should avoid testing only one EFU when multiple EFUs share the power supply. The impact of the power supply environment requires the entire system to be investigated. The core of the EFU power abnormality is not 'the power number is wrong', but whether the load, power supply and motor status behind the power change form a traceable judgment chain.
The EFU power is 10% higher than the rated value. Can I still use it?
Check the filter pressure difference first. If the pressure difference is close to or exceeds the replacement threshold, the increase in power is a normal phenomenon caused by the fan compensation resistance, and the power should fall back after replacing the filter. If the voltage difference is normal but the power continues to be high, check the power supply voltage and bearing status. Before the cause is confirmed, it is not recommended to operate in the power exceeding the limit state for a long time.
What is the reason for the sudden decrease in EFU power?
Check the power supply and speed regulation signals first. Low voltage, the speed control command being mistakenly set to low speed, or poor communication line contact may lead to a sudden reduction in power. If the electrical side is OK, then check the motor windings and capacitors. A power reduction is often easier to ignore than a power increase because it does not trigger the overload protection, but may mean that the air supply volume is insufficient.
How to check if only one of the multiple EFUs has abnormal power?
Compare the power, current and speed of this EFU with other EFUs under the same working conditions. If other EFUs are normal, first check whether the filter pressure difference and air inlet of this EFU are individually blocked. If the parameter difference is not large but the power reading is abnormal, check whether the current sensor or communication reading of the EFU is accurate.
