What customer needs are impregnated activated carbon filters suitable for?

Impregnated activated carbon is a type of media found in chemical filters. It is based on ordinary activated carbon and undergoes chemical impregnation to allow the medium to have stronger adsorption or reaction capabilities for specific gases.

But 'impregnation' does not mean everything. Different impregnation formulas target different target gases, and the applicable range is determined by the formula and test conditions. Not all impregnated activated carbon is suitable for all gases, nor can the name 'impregnated' be understood to mean that it is effective for all acids, alkalis, and organic substances. When selecting, you still have to go back to the specific gas, concentration and working conditions. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion on whether to choose activated carbon or other adsorption media for chemical filters .

Confirm type by target gas

The suitability of impregnated activated carbon depends on the impregnation recipe.

Acid gas. Acidic gases such as sulfur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, and nitrogen oxides usually require alkaline-impregnated activated carbon to neutralize or react the medium with the acidic components. For specific differences, please refer to whether chemical filters can remove sulfur dioxide from the air . Discussion of

alkaline gas. Alkaline gases such as ammonia and amines usually require acid-impregnated activated carbon. This type of media enhances the adsorption effect by reacting acidic components with alkaline gases. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of whether chemical filters can remove ammonia from the air .

Formaldehyde and other small molecules. Formaldehyde, low molecular aldehydes, etc. may require specially treated media, and ordinary activated carbon or conventional impregnated carbon may not be suitable. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of whether chemical filters can remove formaldehyde .

Mercury vapor and other special gases. Certain special gases require specialized impregnation formulations, such as sulfur-impregnated activated carbon for mercury vapor treatment. This type of application has a narrow scope and requires confirmation of the corresponding formula and test data.

Different target gases require different impregnation types and cannot be mixed. An impregnated carbon that handles acidic gases will not necessarily be effective against ammonia; the same goes for vice versa. The specific gas name should be stated in the project document so that the supplier can confirm which formula should be used. For specific principles, please refer to Discussion on why chemical filters should be selected according to the target gas .

Compare actual performance

After determining the media orientation, check the specific performance.

Focus on target gas efficiency and capacity. The report should specify the test gas, concentration, air volume and temperature and humidity conditions. The impregnation type is the same but the formulation is different and performance may vary.

Initial efficiency and capacity should be looked at separately. High initial efficiency does not mean long life. The reaction products of impregnated activated carbon may occupy pores or cover active sites, and capacity data can help determine how long it will last at the target load. For specific life assessment, please refer to Discussion of how long chemical filters last .

Temperature and humidity conditions must match. Certain impregnation formulations may exhibit altered performance in high temperature or high humidity environments. The impregnated ingredients may be hygroscopic or the reaction conditions may be moisture sensitive. When selecting, confirm the suitability of the media in the target environment.

The resistance also needs to be compared. Different media and filling methods may bring different resistance. Whether the system fan can withstand it needs to be calculated together. For specific methods, please refer to Discussion of how much the added resistance of the chemical filter will increase the fan's electricity consumption .

Pay attention to clean environment requirements

If impregnated activated carbon is used in clean rooms or equipment, clean compatibility also needs to be confirmed.

Release gas and powder. Some impregnation media may release trace components or generate dust during operation. If the filter section is located upstream of the clean area, it needs to be confirmed whether the media meets the clean compatibility requirements. For specific verification methods, please refer to Discussion on how to verify the low outgassing requirements of ULPA .

Material compatibility. Impregnation ingredients may be corrosive or reactive to the frame, gasket or edge material. All filter components must be compatible with the media. Please refer to the specific material selection What is the Difference Between Chemical and HEPA Filters ? Material compatibility is discussed in

Structurally sealed. The frame and sealing method of the impregnated activated carbon filter must also meet the installation requirements. Bypass air leakage will allow untreated air to bypass the filter material and affect the outlet concentration.

Replacement and maintenance

The basis for replacing impregnated activated carbon is similar to that of ordinary activated carbon, but there are also things that need attention.

After the medium is consumed, the outlet concentration may rise. After the reaction products occupy the active sites, the processing capacity decreases. Outlet trends are a better reflection of remaining capacity than pressure differentials.

Pay attention to the media status when replacing. The impregnation medium may contain chemical residues, so protective measures must be taken according to project requirements when replacing. Device-side applications such as FFU with chemical filter or For MAU box-type chemical filters , the replacement space and protection conditions must be confirmed in advance.

Document conditions of use. Inlet concentration, air volume, operating hours and reasons for replacement should be recorded. If the effect changes later, it can help determine whether it is media consumption, front-end problems or changes in working conditions.

Project judgment example

A semiconductor factory is close to a chemical emission source, and acidic gases appeared after fresh air was introduced.

The initial plan is to use ordinary activated carbon filters. After operation, it was found that the acid gas concentration did not decrease significantly. Testing confirmed that ordinary activated carbon has limited adsorption capacity for acidic gases, and activated carbon impregnated with acidic components is required.

Adjustment plan: Replace with an alkaline-impregnated activated carbon filter, and recheck the target gas, inlet concentration, air volume, and humidity conditions. The position of the filter section has been adjusted to ensure that the air flows through the filter material. After adjustment, the outlet concentration meets the requirements and the acid gas problem is under control.

This case illustrates: The selection of impregnated activated carbon depends on the specific gas and impregnation type. You cannot just write 'activated carbon'. involving For the configuration of the chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the target gas list and working conditions to the supplier for verification.
