The efficiency data of chemical filters often appear in two calibers: one is the initial efficiency of a new filter element, and the other is the lifetime efficiency after running for a period of time. These two values do not describe the same state, and mixing them can easily lead to misjudgment.
Initial efficiency describes how a new filter performs under specified conditions. It is used to compare starting points for different products, or to confirm whether a product meets design expectations. Lifetime efficiency will vary with pollution load, media consumption and operating conditions. As the running time increases, the outlet concentration may gradually increase and the efficiency may decrease. If the initial efficiency is directly regarded as the full life commitment during model selection, export exceeding the standard may occur in advance during actual operation.
Initial efficiency is the reference starting point for selection, but attention should be paid to conditional alignment when comparing.
The initial test is easy to compare when the target gas, concentration, air volume and environment are consistent. The efficiencies of the two products measured at different air volumes and concentrations cannot be directly sorted together. The test conditions should be noted on the report, including gas name, inlet concentration, air volume, temperature and humidity and detection method. For specific report interpretation, please refer to Discussion of why chemical filter performance reports list specific target gases .
The values under different conditions cannot alone determine the advantages and disadvantages. One product has a high initial efficiency at low air volume, and another has a slightly lower initial efficiency at high air volume. This does not mean that the first product is more suitable for the project. It depends on which conditions correspond to the actual working conditions.
High initial efficiency does not mean high capacity. Some media have strong initial adsorption capacity, but limited capacity and penetrate quickly; some media have slightly lower initial efficiency, but have large capacity and more stable long-term performance. The two dimensions should be viewed separately.
After installation, the efficiency will change, and the change trend is more important than the single data.
After the gas load is accumulated, the outlet concentration may gradually increase. When the medium is consumed by adsorption or reaction to a certain extent, the remaining capacity decreases and the outlet concentration begins to rise. This process may be gradual or may be accelerated at some stage.
Changes in operating temperature, humidity or inlet composition may also cause changes in performance. An increase in temperature may cause desorption of adsorbed substances; an increase in humidity may compete for adsorption sites; a sudden increase in inlet concentration may accelerate media consumption. These factors all affect lifetime efficiency.
The penetration curve is a better reflection of long-term performance than single-point efficiency. The penetration curve records the change of outlet concentration with operating time or cumulative load, which can help determine how long the medium can be used. For specific life assessment methods, please refer to Discussion of how long chemical filters last .
The end point of lifetime efficiency usually corresponds to the replacement criterion.
The outlet concentration or related efficiency requirements should be clarified and the frequency of testing should be set. At what level does the outlet concentration need to be treated? Is it a fixed value or a ratio relative to the entrance? How long is the testing cycle? These conditions must be agreed upon during the planning stage and cannot be discussed during operation.
Initial effectiveness, capacity and maintenance criteria jointly determine the available service life. The media capacity determines the theoretical upper limit of life, the actual load determines the consumption rate, and the maintenance criteria determine when to replace it. Only by combining the three can a reasonable replacement cycle be calculated.
You cannot judge by just pressing the difference. The resistance of a chemical filter may not change much over its lifetime, but its gas handling capacity has declined. A normal pressure difference does not mean that the outlet is up to standard. For specific troubleshooting ideas, please refer to Discussion of what to check if the pressure difference before and after the chemical filter suddenly rises .
The efficiency calculation method and sampling conditions must also be consistent. The detection of efficiency during the service life should be carried out using methods and points that are comparable to the initial efficiency. Otherwise the data cannot be compared. For specific methods, please refer to Discussion on how to calculate the removal efficiency of chemical filters .
After a new chemical filter was installed on a project, the outlet concentration met the target and the initial efficiency data was good.
After several months of operation, the outlet concentration gradually increased and approached the agreed replacement threshold. The investigation found that the inlet load was higher than estimated during the design stage and the media consumption was accelerated. At the same time, the operating temperature increases in summer, which has an impact on the adsorption equilibrium.
Treatment method: First review the inlet concentration and operating conditions to confirm the actual load; then adjust the replacement cycle based on the outlet trend and remaining capacity. At the same time, evaluate whether it is necessary to add pretreatment before the filter section to reduce the inlet load. After the adjustment, the outlet concentration returned to the controllable range, and the replacement cycle was recalculated.
This case illustrates that initial efficiency is only the starting point, and lifetime efficiency reflects actual operating performance. involving When selecting a chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the initial data and operating conditions to the supplier for verification.

The core of the difference between initial efficiency and lifetime efficiency is to match product data with actual operating conditions. If this part of information is clarified during the planning stage, subsequent verification will be much smoother.
Aili Industrial has independent manufacturing capabilities in filters, motors, fans, control systems and sheet metal processing, and can provide chemical filter product series and supporting air supply equipment. For projects that need to evaluate the filtration effect, we can assist in checking the testing plan and filter material configuration based on the target gas, inlet load, operating conditions and acceptance requirements. When the filter is matched with MAU, FFU, EFU and other equipment, the sampling point location and maintenance method can be confirmed uniformly.
