Directly linking lifespan and level is the most common misunderstanding in this issue.
Some people think that ULPA has a higher grade, so it is 'more durable'; others think that ULPA has greater resistance, so it 'can be replaced faster'. Neither statement is accurate. The lifespan difference between HEPA and ULPA does not come from the grade name itself, but from operating conditions, upstream protection, nature of pollutants and replacement criteria.
The same ULPA, installed in a system with adequate pre-filtration, may be used for a long time; installed in a location with high dust load and failure of the front stage, it may need to be replaced soon. The same goes for HEPA. So when asking 'Which one has the longest life', it is better to ask 'What is the actual load at this position and what is the basis for replacement'.
The filtration mechanisms of ULPA and HEPA are the same, and the main difference is the allowable penetration rate. This difference will affect filter material selection and structural design, but does not directly determine lifespan.
ULPA may use denser filter media or a more compact structure . Under the same dimensions, the effective filtration area, dust holding capacity and resistance characteristics may be different from HEPA. However, these differences depend on the specific product design and cannot be generalized.
Some ULPAs balance resistance by increasing the filtering area , and the dust holding capacity may not be low; some HEPAs also have their own choices in structural design in order to adapt to large air volumes. Lifespan cannot be judged by just looking at the grade.
What really needs to be looked at is: how much particle load there is at this location, how well the front-end protection is done, whether the operating air volume is stable, and whether there is any risk of moisture or oil mist. Only after these conditions are determined can the replacement cycle be discussed.
The service life is shortened, usually manifested by a rapid rise in pressure difference or an obvious decrease in air volume. But 'blockage' is just a symptom. The reasons behind it are different, and the treatment methods are also different.
The front-end protection fails. The primary and medium-efficiency filters have not been replaced for a long time, or a bypass is installed, and the dust is directly pressed to the end. In this case, changing the end filter element will not solve the problem, and it will still get clogged quickly next time. For specific configuration ideas, please refer to the instructions related to pre-filtering.
The pollutants have special properties. Oil mist, sticky dust, moisture agglomeration, and ordinary dry dust are handled differently. This type of load may change the surface condition of the filter material, and the pressure difference rise rate will also be different. For pretreatment requirements for oil mist airflow, please refer to the relevant instructions.
Changes in operating air volume. When the fan speed is increased, the pressure difference may change even if there is no additional dust accumulation on the filter element. When comparing replacement cycles, make sure the working conditions are consistent and do not regard changes caused by speed regulation as shortened life.
Miscalculation in measurement or judgment. Failure of the differential pressure gauge, blockage of the pressure pipe, and inconsistent recording methods may cause people to mistakenly believe that the condition of the filter element has deteriorated. When encountering abnormal readings, first check the measurement link and then judge the filter element. For specific troubleshooting ideas, please refer to the relevant instructions on increased pressure difference.
Integrity exception. The filter material is damaged, the edge sealing is cracked, and the sealing fails, which may trigger replacement when the pressure difference does not reach the final resistance. This type of problem belongs to the category of integrity and is different from blockage. The leak detection results can better explain the situation than the pressure difference.
The basis for replacing HEPA and ULPA is usually not a single indicator, but the superposition of several signals.
Pressure differential trend. Under the same air volume, the pressure difference gradually increases, and the dust accumulation speed can be judged along the trend. When the final resistance agreed upon by the project is reached, it will be handled according to the maintenance requirements. The final resistance is not the product damage point, but the maintenance limit. For specific setting methods, please refer to the relevant instructions of the initial resistance and final resistance.
Air volume decreases. If the fan is no longer able to maintain the target air supply volume, even if the pressure difference has not reached the limit, it may still need to be dealt with. This is more obvious in systems with constant air volume control - the controller will continue to increase the speed until the upper limit of the capacity is reached.
Leak detection results. If a leak is found during on-site leak inspection, or there is a problem with the integrity of the filter material, even if the pressure difference is normal, it must be handled according to project requirements. Integrity abnormality and blockage are two independent judgment lines, and you cannot just look at the pressure difference.
operating time and pollution load. Time itself is not a basis for replacement, but it can be used as a reference. For the same running time, the status of the filter element may be completely different between high and low pollution load positions.
Process changes. If process adjustments result in changes in particle control requirements, or if new dust-generating processes are added, the original replacement cycle may need to be re-evaluated.
If HEPA and ULPA are mixed in the project, or some locations are upgraded from HEPA to ULPA, there are several things to check when replacing.
Effect of resistance changes on fans. The resistance of ULPA is usually higher than that of HEPA of the same size. After replacement, it is necessary to confirm whether the fan can still maintain the target air volume. involving For the FFU fan filter unit system, the unit working point and filter element resistance must be checked together; the equipment end application is as follows: The EFU equipment-end fan filter unit has a compact internal space and less room for adjustment.
Whether the sealing interface matches. The matching dimensions of the liquid tank seal or gasket compression must be confirmed item by item, not just the appearance. Please refer to the relevant instructions for checking the compression state of the gasket and the coordination of the liquid tank.
Check whether the data is updated. The replaced filter element model, grade, serial number and test records must be kept accordingly. involving For HEPA/ULPA air filter products of different grades, the data requirements are implemented in accordance with corresponding standards.
Spare parts management should be divided into different levels. There may be both HEPA and ULPA in the same system, and spare parts cannot be purchased based on appearance alone. Filter elements of different grades and sealing structures should be marked with applicable locations respectively.
The two production lines use the same grade of ULPA filter elements, but the replacement cycles are obviously different.
The first line is in the clean room, and the pre-filtration maintenance is normal. The pressure difference of the filter element is still relatively stable after running for more than a year. The second line is at the equipment end. The inlet air contains oil mist, and the front stage only has an initial effect. The ULPA will have viscous deposits within a few months, and the pressure difference will rise rapidly.
This difference is not 'unstable quality' of ULPA, but the difference in upstream conditions and pollution loads of the two lines. The processing direction of the second line is not to replace it with a higher-level ULPA, but to first evaluate the source of oil mist and the front-end configuration to ensure that the air entering the end meets the design conditions of ULPA. Differences in replacement cycles often have to go back to the system level to find the reasons.

The filter replacement cycle is ultimately judged by operating data. The information is complete and the records are continuous, so there is a basis for judgment.
Aili Industrial's manufacturing system covers filters, motors, fans, control systems and complete machine assembly, and can provide HEPA/ULPA products of different grades and supporting air supply equipment. filter with FFU fan filter unit、When the EFU equipment-end fan filter unit is matched in the same system, the filter element resistance and fan operating point can be confirmed together during the planning stage to facilitate comparison and judgment in subsequent operations. When selecting spare parts, check according to the original model, installation interface and operating parameters.
Provide usage conditions, maintenance records and replacement reasons when enquiring, which will help confirm the appropriate spare parts solution. The specific replacement cycle is subject to the actual operation data and maintenance requirements of the project.
