If the number of FFU is insufficient, it will usually not only show the result of 'particles exceeding the standard'. It may first manifest as coverage gaps, insufficient air volume at critical workstations, slow recovery, or elevated dynamic particles, but these symptoms may also be caused by blocked return air, clogged filters, increased pollution loads, or seal bypasses. If you directly press 'Insufficient Quantity' to expand the capacity, you may install more equipment without solving the fundamental problem.
The following will start from the aspects of on-site performance, troubleshooting methods, and expansion judgment.
Insufficient number of FFU is a problem of system capability, but there are many reasons for on-site particle anomalies. The return air channel is blocked, the filter resistance increases, the air supply is short-circuited, the input of personnel and materials increases, the equipment produces dust, and the door opens frequently, all may make the originally adequate FFU system appear 'insufficient'.
If you are not sure whether it is a problem with the number of devices or a change in system conditions, you can first check Can FFU independently determine the cleanroom grade? , clarify the relationship between equipment capabilities and site levels, and then proceed to specific investigations.
One of the most common manifestations of an insufficient number of FFUs is a gap in the protection scope. It seems that there is air supply above the workstation, but the key operating position is at the boundary between two FFUs, or is blocked by lamps, pipelines, and mechanical structures, and the actual effective coverage is insufficient.
Such gaps are not necessarily exposed in static testing. The airflow may appear uniform when the table is empty, but it is only after clamps, materials, and operating arms are placed that the weak protection zone becomes apparent. During inspection, the coverage should be calibrated according to the actual work station location, rather than just looking at how many FFUs are on the ceiling. If open workstations are involved, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation? , first confirm the protection boundary and lateral interference.
The FFU operation indicator light is normal and there is wind on the air outlet surface, which does not mean that the wind speed at the critical workstation is sufficient. As the filter accumulates dust, the inlet resistance increases, or the return air is poor, the actual working point will shift and the wind speed at the workstation may be lower than expected.
During inspection, the wind speed and airflow direction at the workpiece location should be measured instead of only the FFU outlet surface. For specific methods, please refer to How to convert face wind speed and air volume? and How should we look at the effective air outlet area of FFU? . If it is found that the wind speed of different workstations in the same area is significantly different, you should check whether the air volume distribution is even, rather than simply increasing the total number of units.
Insufficient FFU numbers may not be visible in static testing, but will increase in particles during dynamic production. Personnel entry, material unpacking, robot movements and exhaust switching will increase the pollution load or change the air flow path. If the system margin is insufficient, protection cannot be maintained under dynamic conditions.
Verification should be performed under normal production conditions, covering representative actions. If only the empty state or static state is measured, the dynamic weak area may be missed. The sampling point layout should also cover the actual product exposure location, rather than just under the air supply outlet. Related methods can be found in Why can’t the sampling point be located just below the air supply outlet?。
Another symptom is slow recovery. If the particle concentration does not decrease for a long time after the door is opened, people come in and out, or dust is generated briefly, it indicates that the system has insufficient dilution or elimination capabilities. This may be related to the number of FFU, or it may be related to the return air path, the number of air changes, or the air flow short circuit.
If the particle recovery time is significantly longer, you should first check whether the return air channel is clear, whether the filter is blocked, and whether the supply air is short-circuited. For detailed investigation, please refer to What particle problems can airflow short circuits cause? and How to reduce local retention in non-unidirectional flow clean rooms?。
To determine whether the number of FFU is insufficient, you must not just look at the number of stations, but also check the actual working points. Need to record: unit air volume, outlet surface wind speed, filter pressure difference, fan speed, inlet resistance and return air conditions.
If the nominal air volume is high, but a longer air duct or a high-resistance filter is connected after being installed in the ceiling, the actual air volume may drop significantly. At this time, you should check the complete performance curve. For specific methods, please refer to Why should we look at the complete performance curve when selecting FFU? . Also confirm whether the nominal air volume includes the filter load, please refer to Is FFU's nominal air volume tested with a filter?。
Before deciding to increase FFU, the following factors should be ruled out:
Whether the return air channel is blocked by equipment, shelves or pipelines;
Whether the filter is damaged and whether the seal is bypassed;
Is the supply air short-circuited and the air enters the return air without passing through the work station?
Whether the pollution load increases, such as new personnel, processes or materials;
Whether the exhaust air draws away the protective airflow, resulting in local negative pressure;
Whether the control setting changes, such as speed reduction or zone closure.
If these problems are not resolved, simply increasing the number of FFU may not achieve the desired results. Capacity expansion also involves power distribution, ceiling load and return air capacity. Insufficient maintenance channels will increase later expenses. This is in what later expenses will be increased due to insufficient maintenance channels . There is a more detailed analysis of
After confirming the need for capacity expansion, the electrical capacity, ceiling load-bearing, return air margin and control interface should be checked. If the project is constructed in phases, please refer to What are the expansion conditions for using independent modules in clean systems? , reserve extension conditions in advance.
When selecting equipment, please refer to the background air supply of the room. FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance.The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency?。
If zone duty and troubleshooting are required, they can be combined FFU group control system provides unified management.
The particles at a certain electronic workshop station were occasionally high, and the original plan was to add a batch of FFU. The investigation found that the return air outlet was blocked by packaging boxes, the air flow was short-circuited in some areas, and the wind speed at key workstations was insufficient. Adjustment method: Clean the return air channel, rebalance the air volume in each area, and increase local air supply to the covered workstations. After the adjustment, the graininess decreased without a large increase in FFU.
In another project, the particles increased during dynamic production, but the static test was normal. The investigation found that the number of personnel and the frequency of material unpacking were increased compared with the original design, and the system margin was insufficient. Adjustment method: increase the number of FFU, while optimizing logistics routes and entrance isolation. After the expansion, the dynamic particles returned to stability.
These two situations illustrate that the on-site performance of insufficient FFU needs to be comprehensively judged based on coverage, air volume, dynamic particles and recovery time. Find out the reasons first and then decide whether to expand the capacity.

Aili Industry covers motor manufacturing, independent research and development and production of fans, control system development, sheet metal processing, air filter manufacturing and complete machine assembly. In view of the insufficient number of FFU and expansion projects, FFU, EFU, HEPA/ULPA filters, group control systems, air volume, static pressure, and installation interfaces can be uniformly checked to connect the equipment configuration with the on-site evaluation boundary and reduce the disconnect between component parameters and the operating conditions of the entire machine.
