The clean system uses independent modules to facilitate phased construction and flexible adjustment. But modularity does not mean that it can be spliced at will. If there is no reserved space for power distribution, communications, structural loads, air supply and return, and maintenance in the early stage, problems such as module inability to install, air flow interference, and control system incompatibility may occur during later expansion.
While the module operates independently, it must also be confirmed that it does not disrupt the airflow in adjacent areas. Let’s start with several practical aspects.
Adjacent modules may share background rooms, return air ducts, or make-up air systems. After adding a new area, the return air resistance and pressure difference may change. The overall working point should be checked to avoid partial expansion that will starve other workstations of air.
If multiple modules share a supply and air supply system, you need to confirm whether the air volume of the new module will affect the original area. Reference when necessary How does clean air supply coverage affect the number of equipment? , recalculate the air volume distribution. If each module needs to be controlled independently, it can be combined The FFU group control system configures operation strategies according to regions and time periods.
One of the most common problems with modular expansion is insufficient power distribution capacity. After adding new FFU, EFU, lighting or sensors, the original power distribution cabinet may not have redundant circuits. Capacity and starting conditions should be reserved in the early stage, and cable paths and bridge space should be confirmed.
In terms of communication, if each module requires unified monitoring or partition management, the control protocol, address allocation and interface form should be agreed in advance. This prevents different batches of equipment from being able to access the same system later. For specific control plans, please refer to FFU group control system , understand the partition and duty logic.
Adding new modules will increase the ceiling load. If only the ceiling openings are reserved in the early stage and the load-bearing structure is not checked, reinforcement may be required later, which will increase the cost and construction period. The ceiling module, supporting edge width and equipment weight should be confirmed in advance to ensure that the expansion module can be installed safely.
Maintenance channels must also be reserved simultaneously. If the equipment is installed too high or too far inside, it will be troublesome to replace the filter element and inspect it later. Insufficient maintenance channels will increase subsequent expenditures. This is reflected in what later expenses will be increased due to insufficient maintenance channels . There is a more specific cost analysis in
After the module is expanded, the return air resistance may increase and the demand for supplementary air may also change. If the original return air channel is occupied by later equipment, or the air supply volume is insufficient, the air volume of the newly added module may not reach the designed value. The return air and make-up air margins should be evaluated in the early stage, and the pressure difference and air volume should be re-measured after expansion.
If the project involves exhaust air, the balance between supply air and exhaust air must also be checked to prevent the room pressure difference from getting out of control after expansion. For more air volume calculation methods, please refer to How to convert the clean area area into air supply demand?。
Agree in advance on the ceiling module, filter specifications, control address and installation basis, while retaining the necessary margin. When the loads at different workstations are inconsistent, the interface can be unified and the air volume and filtration level can be configured separately.
When selecting equipment, please refer to the background air supply of the room. FFU clean air supply products , please refer to the local protection of the equipment side. EFU equipment side fan filter unit . The logic of division of labor between the two lies in The division of labor between device-side EFU and room FFU is explained in detail.
Filter selection should correspond to target particle size and actual resistance. The HEPA and ULPA filter pages have parameters for different levels of products. When selecting, check the efficiency of the specific model at the target air volume. If you are still unclear about the difference between space rating and filter efficiency, you can read What is the difference between cleanliness level and filtration efficiency ? Avoid mixing the two concepts together when making selections.
An electronics workshop only installed some FFUs in the first phase and reserved ceiling openings, but no air return capacity and power distribution capacity were reserved. During the second phase expansion, it was discovered that the newly added FFU could not be connected to the original distribution cabinet, and the return air channel was also occupied by cargo, resulting in insufficient air volume in some areas. Adjustment methods: Add independent power distribution circuits, clean the return air channels, and rebalance the air volume in each area.
Another project unified the ceiling modulus, control protocol and installation standards in the first phase. When the second phase was expanded, it was installed directly according to the reserved interfaces, and the debugging cycle was significantly shortened.
These two situations illustrate that modular expansion, early reservation and interface unification are more cost-effective than later transformation.
