How do FFU, MAU and DCC divide their labor? Clean air supply and heat and moisture treatment synergy

The three device names are different and the tasks cannot be mixed.

In clean room air conditioning systems, FFU, MAU and DCC are three common equipment abbreviations. FFU is the fan filter unit, MAU is the fresh air treatment unit, and DCC is the dry cooling coil. All three are involved in air treatment, but perform different tasks.

During project selection, if you only purchase equipment based on their names without clarifying their respective task boundaries and interface conditions, problems such as repeated configurations, insufficient capabilities, or system mismatches may easily occur. Clean room air treatment is a whole. FFU is responsible for circulating filtered air supply, MAU is responsible for fresh air treatment, and DCC participates in sensible heat treatment. The three need to work together.

The specific division of labor depends on the climate conditions of the project area, clean room heat and moisture load, process exhaust volume and fresh air ratio. The optimal division of labor may be different for different projects, and a fixed template cannot be applied. Aili Industrial has complete production capabilities in FFU complete machines and system matching, and can cooperate with the project to confirm the role of FFU in the air treatment system. For the basic structure of the FFU machine, you can refer toAili Industrial FFU fan filter unit。

What tasks does FFU undertake in the system?

The main task of FFU is to circulate, filter and supply air. It sucks in air from the return air or mezzanine, sends it to the clean area after passing through a high-efficiency filter, and maintains the particle control level in the clean room. FFU usually takes up most of the circulating air volume in the room and is the main source of power for the clean room air flow organization.

FFU itself usually does not undertake fresh air treatment, dehumidification or temperature control tasks. Its functions focus on filtration and air supply. If the project requires temperature and humidity control, this part of the task is usually undertaken by MAU, DCC or other air handling equipment.

The air volume and static pressure of FFU need to match the room air flow organization, return air path and air supply end. If the FFU air volume or static pressure is insufficient, the air exchange rate and cleanliness of the room may be affected. If the FFU air volume is too large, energy consumption and air flow disturbance may increase.

What tasks does MAU undertake?

MAU is usually responsible for handling fresh air. Before fresh air enters the clean room, it needs to be filtered, heated, cooled, humidified or dehumidified to meet the temperature, humidity and cleanliness requirements of the clean room. MAU also assumes part of the fresh air volume required to maintain positive pressure in the room.

The processing capacity of MAU needs to be determined based on the climate conditions of the project location. In humid areas, MAU may require strong dehumidification capabilities. In cold regions, MAU may require heating and winterization measures. The fresh air volume of MAU should match the room exhaust volume, positive pressure requirements and personnel needs.

The interface between MAU and FFU lies in the fresh air delivery method and location. Fresh air can be sent into the ceiling mezzanine, return air channel or directly into the room. The fresh air supply position will affect the air inlet conditions of the FFU and the room airflow organization.

What tasks does DCC undertake?

DCCs are commonly used to handle sensible heat loads in clean rooms. It uses chilled water or other refrigerants to absorb the heat generated by equipment, lighting and personnel in the room to control the room temperature. DCC usually does not undertake dehumidification tasks because the surface temperature of the dry cooling coil is higher than the dew point to avoid the generation of condensation water.

The installation location of DCC can be on the ceiling mezzanine, return air channel or in the room. The cooperation between DCC and FFU lies in the air path. If the DCC is installed on the air inlet side of the FFU, the cooled air enters the FFU and is sent to the room. If the DCC is installed on the return air side, the return air is first cooled and then circulated.

The cooling capacity of the DCC needs to match the room heat load. If the cooling capacity is insufficient, the room temperature may be too high. If the cooling capacity is too large, unnecessary energy consumption may occur.

How the three work together

The collaboration of FFU, MAU and DCC requires clarifying several interface conditions. In terms of air volume balance, the fresh air volume, room exhaust air volume and FFU circulating air volume provided by MAU need to be balanced to maintain the room pressure difference. In terms of heat and moisture treatment, MAU handles the heat and moisture load of fresh air, DCC handles the indoor sensible heat load, and FFU does not undertake the heat and moisture treatment task. In terms of airflow organization, FFU air supply coverage, return air path and DCC location need to be coordinated to avoid airflow short circuits or dead zones. In terms of control, FFU group control, MAU control and DCC control need to be coordinated to avoid mutual interference.

For clean room projects, it is recommended to clarify the division of tasks and interface conditions among the three during the system design stage, and jointly verify them during the commissioning stage. System-level issues may not be discovered if you only debug individual devices individually.

Issues that should be confirmed in advance during project communication

In the design stage of the clean room air handling system, it is recommended to confirm the following with the designer and equipment supplier: the air volume and static pressure range assumed by the FFU; the fresh air volume and processing capacity of the MAU; the cooling capacity and installation location of the DCC; room pressure difference and air volume balance requirements; heat and moisture load distribution; fresh air delivery location and FFU air inlet conditions; interfaces between control systems; joint debugging and verification methods.

in conclusion

FFU, MAU and DCC perform different tasks in the clean room air treatment system. FFU is responsible for circulating filtered air supply, MAU is responsible for fresh air treatment, and DCC participates in sensible heat treatment. The three cannot be selected independently based on their names. The division of labor needs to be determined based on the project climate, heat and moisture load, and air flow organization.
