What is the difference between a DC fan case and an AC fan case? Compare according to the same working conditions

People often ask at the scene: Is a DC fan case necessarily more energy efficient than an AC fan case? There is no direct 'yes' or 'no' answer to this question. The same fan has completely different input power under different air volumes and different static pressures. Talking about power saving without working conditions is equivalent to not talking about it.

Direct answer: The difference between a DC fan chassis and an AC fan chassis is not in the words 'DC' or 'AC', but in whether the input power, speed regulation method, control interface and maintenance conditions of the whole machine are more in line with the project requirements under the same air volume, the same external static pressure, and the same operating time. The AC frequency conversion solution can also adjust speed, and the DC solution does not naturally save power. The starting point for comparison is to unify the working conditions first.

Unify the comparison conditions first, otherwise the numbers will be meaningless

Some people directly compared the nominal power of the two devices, but did not check the corresponding air volume and static pressure. High nominal power does not mean greater actual power consumption, and low nominal power does not mean more economical operation. The fan may output completely different air volumes under different resistances. The working points are different, and the power is naturally different.

At least these items should be locked when comparing: design air volume, external static pressure, power supply conditions, operating hours, filter status, valve opening, and noise test distance. Without any one of them, the two solutions are not on the same baseline. If the end of the system is configuredFor HEPA/ULPA high-efficiency filters , the initial resistance and post-use resistance of the filter should be included in the calculation of the working point. When the process requirements are higher, it can be evaluatedDoes the ULPA ultra-high efficiency filter meet the requirements?

Differences between motors and drive methods

The AC fan case may use a fixed-speed motor or may be equipped with a frequency converter to achieve speed regulation. Fixed-speed models rely on air valves or bypasses to adjust the air volume, and the motor speed basically remains unchanged during operation. AC variable frequency models change the speed through the frequency converter, and the speed adjustment range depends on the matching of the frequency converter and the motor.

DC fan cases usually use EC motors or brushless DC motors, and the speed is controlled by a matching driver. EC motors use permanent magnet rotors, which have low rotor losses and have a flatter efficiency curve than AC motors under partial load conditions. But this does not mean that the DC solution will definitely save power. If the system runs at full load for a long time, the advantage of the DC solution mainly comes from the motor efficiency itself; if there are obvious duty or partial load periods, the benefits from speed regulation will increase significantly.

The input power of the whole machine is the basis for energy consumption comparison.

The rated power of the motor is used to define the motor's capability, and the input power of the whole machine is the actual power consumption of the fan box under specific working conditions. The two are not the same number. When comparing DC and AC solutions, the supplier should be required to provide the input power of the complete machine under the same air volume and external static pressure, and indicate the rotation speed, filter status and valve opening during the test.

From the fan law, the air volume is proportional to the rotational speed, and the shaft power is proportional to the cube of the rotational speed. The rotation speed is reduced by 20%, the air volume is reduced by approximately 20%, and the shaft power is reduced to approximately 51% of the rated value. However, the actual energy saving depends on the load curve, system resistance characteristics and speed regulation strategy. You cannot promise a fixed power saving ratio based on the word 'DC' alone.

Annual power consumption should be calculated separately according to working conditions: the input power of each working condition is multiplied by the corresponding operating hours, and then the various working conditions are added. Simply using the maximum power multiplied by the number of hours throughout the year can easily overestimate the actual power consumption; only using low-speed power calculations can miss high-load periods.

Control interface and maintenance conditions

Three common types of signals are analog, PWM and communication control in DC solutions; analog, communication or panel control may be used in AC frequency conversion solutions. The terminal definitions of different drives may be different. Please check with the electrical diagram and terminal description before on-site wiring. In particular, retrofit projects should confirm whether the interlocking logic of the original system can be retained and who is responsible for locating and replacing components in the event of a failure.

The way drives, control boards, frequency converters and spare parts are managed should also be considered during repairs. For multiple equipment projects, it is recommended to unify the model and spare parts compatibility range to avoid increasing the complexity of later maintenance. Fault diagnosis, spare parts identification and wiring information for DC drives and control boards should be delivered with the equipment, not just a general manual.

Renovation projects should first test the original system

If the old equipment on site is in a half-closed state for a long time, it means that the original system is over-configured. First measure the actual terminal air volume and pressure, and then determine the working points that the new solution needs to cover, instead of directly copying the rated maximum value of the old equipment.

The renovation project also requires an inventory of the original foundation, power supply capacity, control cabinet interfaces and maintenance space. Whether the DC solution is suitable mainly depends on whether the target working point can be covered, and whether the modified electrical and maintenance interfaces can be safely grounded. If the size of the original system air duct is too small and the resistance is too high, simply replacing the power equipment may not solve the problem of insufficient air volume at the end.

How to compare when matched with filter equipment

If the system end configurationFor HEPA/ULPA high-efficiency filters , the initial resistance and resistance at the end of use of the filter should be included in the working point calculation of both solutions. When a large area of clean room ceiling air supply is required, you can compare at the same timeFFU fan filter unit ; it can be used when multiple devices are managed centrally. The FFU computer group control system realizes zone speed regulation and status monitoring. If the core requirement is machine-level protection of a single process equipment,Equipment-end fan filter units (EFU) may be more suitable in terms of size and installation method. When final filtration and uniform air supply are required at the end of the air duct, you can also consider usingHigh-efficiency air supply outlet (HEPA BOX)。

The division of labor boundaries between these equipment and the fan box should be clearly drawn on the system flow chart to avoid confusing power equipment and filtering equipment.

Matching of the whole machine determines the comparison result

When comparing DC and AC solutions, it ultimately comes down to the matching of the entire machine. Whether the impeller and motor torque characteristics correspond, whether the driver parameters match the fan curve, and whether the air path loss inside the box is controllable will all affect the input power of the whole machine. Aili Industry has independent supporting capabilities in fans, motors, controls and sheet metal structures. It can check the impeller, motor, driver and box at the same working point, and provide complete machine test data according to project working conditions. This kind of internal collaboration from the power end to the complete machine structure can reduce common matching deviations in outsourced assembly solutions, allowing comparisons between DC and AC to be based on ve

How to form a purchasing conclusion

List the power supply, control protocol, operating point, noise, box interface and total investment in the same comparison table. Each column indicates the test conditions, especially the rotational speed, filter status and valve opening. Power figures for test conditions are missing and cannot be used for scenario comparison.

The procurement documents should list both design and duty working conditions at the same time, and verify the response after start and stop, speed adjustment, alarm and disconnection, and then form a conclusion that can be compared and accepted. Specific structure and configuration options can be found inIt is confirmed in the fan box product catalog that non-standard projects should provide equipment or machine room drawings, and then shape them based on the determined working points and on-site interfaces.
