The filtration of hydrogen chloride cannot only focus on the concentration. Its physical and chemical properties are quite special, and the treatment plan should be judged based on several usage conditions.
Hydrogen chloride is easily soluble in water and can easily form hydrochloric acid droplets in humid air. This means that there may be two forms of gas and liquid droplets in the air flow at the same time, and the treatment methods need to be considered separately. In addition, hydrogen chloride is highly corrosive and requires filter materials, frames and seals. Temperature, humidity, export targets, and system matching will all affect the final plan. For specific selection logic, please refer to Discussion on why chemical filters should be selected according to the target gas .
This is a critical step before selection.
Hydrogen chloride gas (HCl) exists in a gaseous state under dry or low-humidity conditions and can be processed according to the gas filtration method. Hydrochloric acid droplets are tiny droplets formed after hydrogen chloride is dissolved in water. The particle size may range from submicron to several microns, and its properties are closer to particulate matter.
The entrance form should be explained during inspection and selection. If only the gas concentration is measured without evaluating the droplet condition, the actual load may be underestimated. Droplets not only increase the difficulty of processing, but may also directly contaminate the chemical medium and affect the adsorption or reaction effects.
Gas handling and droplet capture should be evaluated separately. The gaseous part can be processed through adapted chemical filter media, and the droplet part may require defogging or pre-filtration. If the amount of droplets is large, directly entering the chemical filtration section may cause the filter material to harden, increase resistance, or decrease capacity. involving For the configuration of the chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the form information together.
Humidity has a relatively direct impact on hydrogen chloride filtration.
In a high-humidity environment, hydrogen chloride is more likely to form hydrochloric acid droplets. If the airflow humidity is close to the dew point, or the system is at risk of condensation, the droplet problem may be more difficult to deal with than the gas itself.
Condensation will change the condition of the filter material. The performance of some chemical media may change after getting wet, or may cause hardening or channel blockage. When selecting, confirm the suitability of the medium within the target humidity range.
System design should consider drainage and water retention. If droplets may exist in the air flow, necessary mist removal or water blocking structures should be provided before the filter section. Drainage measures must also be confirmed to prevent water from entering the subsequent filtration section. Please refer to the specific layout Description of MAU Box Chemical Filter .
Do not replace water removal structures with chemical filters. Chemical filtration processes gases, and droplet control relies on specialized defogging or separation measures. The two have different divisions of labor and cannot be mixed.
Temperature affects the adsorption or reaction of hydrogen chloride and also affects the corrosion resistance of materials.
High temperatures may accelerate corrosion. Hydrogen chloride may become more corrosive to metals and sealing materials at high temperatures. The materials of the filter frame, sealing gasket, and edge sealing glue should be checked according to the temperature conditions.
Low temperatures may increase the risk of condensation. If the air flow temperature is below the dew point, the potential for droplet formation increases. System insulation and temperature control measures need to be considered together.
Temperature changes also need to be considered. Start-stops, intermittent operation or seasonal changes can cause the filter section to experience temperature fluctuations. The thermal expansion of materials and the resilience performance of seals must be confirmed during the design stage. Please refer to the specific material selection What is the Difference Between Chemical and HEPA Filters ? Material compatibility is discussed in
Hydrogen chloride is corrosive to many materials, and every component of the filter must be checked.
Frame material. Ordinary carbon steel or some aluminum alloys may not be resistant to hydrogen chloride corrosion, and stainless steel or anti-corrosion treated materials may be more suitable. Specific selections are confirmed based on concentration, humidity and temperature conditions.
Seals. Sealing gaskets, rubber strips, and edge sealing tape must be resistant to acid corrosion. Some rubber materials may age, swell, or lose elasticity in acidic environments.
filter media. The chemical medium used to process hydrogen chloride itself must be acid-resistant and should not cause structural damage due to reaction products during use. Product information should describe the applicable conditions, not just the initial efficiency.
Compatibility data for these materials usually needs to be provided by the supplier. The project party can provide the supplier with information such as concentration, temperature and humidity, and operating time, and the supplier can confirm whether the material combination is suitable. For specific report interpretation, please refer to Discussion of why chemical filter performance reports list specific target gases .
The export target determines the media usage and structural form, and maintenance requirements affect operating costs.
Exit concentration requirements must be specific. Whether it is equipment anti-corrosion, personnel health or process protection, the corresponding export levels may be different. Testing methods and sampling points must also be clear.
The detection method must be able to detect hydrogen chloride and hydrochloric acid droplets. Detection methods for gases and liquid droplets may differ. If only gas is measured, the contribution of liquid droplets may be missed. It is recommended to state this separately in the project document.
Maintenance cycles are arranged according to capacity and working conditions. The media consumption of hydrogen chloride filtration is affected by the inlet concentration, air volume, temperature and humidity. The replacement cycle cannot be determined uniformly based on time, and should be judged based on export testing and operating data. For specific life assessment methods, please refer to Discussion of how long chemical filters last .
Pay attention to protection during replacement operations. The adsorbed or reacted media may contain acidic residues, so protective measures must be taken according to project requirements when replacing. Device-side applications such as When replacing the filter element of the FFU supporting chemical filter , the operating space and protection conditions must also be confirmed in advance.
The location and configuration of the hydrogen chloride filter section in the system will also affect actual performance.
Pre-filtration protects chemical media. Dust, droplets, or other particles in the air stream may cover or contaminate the chemical media. Setting up appropriate pre-filtration or mist removal measures before the chemical filtration section can reduce the media burden. Please refer to the specific division of labor Discussion on the division of labor between chemical filters and primary filters .
Resistance calculations cannot be missed. Adding chemical filtration sections and defogging measures will increase the total system resistance. When selecting a fan, check the working points at the initial resistance and final resistance to confirm that the air volume meets the requirements. For specific accounting methods, please refer to Discussion of how much the added resistance of the chemical filter will increase the fan's electricity consumption .
Sampling and maintenance channels must be reserved. Sampling ports are provided before and after the filtration section to facilitate tracking of outlet concentration. The channel for replacing filter media should also be confirmed during the design stage. involving For the fresh air project of MAU box-type chemical filter , these requirements must be considered when designing the unit.
The exhaust gas generated by a certain wet etching process contains hydrogen chloride, accompanied by acid mist droplets.
The preliminary plan selected a conventional activated carbon filter section. After operation, it was found that the resistance rose rapidly and the outlet concentration was unstable. Investigation and confirmation: activated carbon has limited adsorption capacity for hydrogen chloride, and the droplets entering the filter layer cause local hardening, which affects the airflow distribution and treatment effect.
Adjustment plan: Add a mist removal measure before the chemical filtration section to capture droplets first; the chemical filtration section uses special media for acidic gases, and the concentration, humidity and temperature conditions are checked. After adjustment, the outlet concentration is stable, the pressure difference rises gently, and the replacement cycle is in line with expectations.
This case illustrates: Hydrogen chloride filtration must consider both gas and liquid droplets, and the material selection must also be acid-resistant. involving When selecting a chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the form, concentration, temperature, humidity, and system conditions to the supplier for verification.
