Some chemical filters deal with contaminants that are not detectable by smell.
For example, acidic gases that are of concern in equipment anti-corrosion projects, alkaline components that are of concern in semiconductor processes, and sulfur-containing gases that are of concern in data centers are all invisible to humans when the concentration is low. But just because you can’t smell it doesn’t mean it’s not there, and it doesn’t mean the filter is still working effectively.
Relying on your nose to determine the timing of replacement is not applicable to this type of working condition. It is necessary to change a set of judgment methods: outlet concentration detection, cumulative load record, filter material remaining capacity assessment, and replacement criteria agreed upon by the project.
Without odor reference, detection becomes the main basis for judgment.
First confirm what gas you want to control. Is it acid gas, alkaline gas, organic vapor, or a mixture of ingredients? Different target gases have different detection methods and sampling conditions. For specific principles, please refer to Discussion on why chemical filters should be selected according to the target gas .
The detection limit of the detection method must be sufficient. Under low concentration conditions, the detection limit of the detection method must meet the project requirements. When the outlet is lower than the detection limit, it should be stated as 'not detected' or 'below the detection limit' according to the method, and cannot be directly regarded as zero concentration. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of what breakthrough concentration means in a chemical filter report .
TVOC alone cannot be used to replace all indicators. TVOC can reflect the trend of some organic pollution, but it is not necessarily sensitive to acid gas, ammonia, sulfide and other components. If the project focuses on a specific ingredient, it needs to be tested individually. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of whether chemical filters can remove ammonia from the air .
Reserve sampling points during the system design phase. Sampling ports are provided before and after the filtration section to facilitate subsequent tracking of outlet concentration changes. For specific point selection, please refer to Discussion of sampling points for chemical filter performance verification .
In addition to testing data, operating conditions must also be recorded.
Inlet concentration and air volume. If the inlet concentration increases or the air volume increases, the cumulative load of the filter material will accelerate. Even if the outlet concentration is temporarily normal, the replacement cycle may need to be advanced. For specific relationships, please refer to Discussion of how long chemical filters last .
Operating hours and shifts vary. The cumulative load is different between continuous operation and intermittent operation. Changing from two shifts to three, increasing output, and extending equipment operating hours will all speed up the consumption of filter media. For specific management methods, please refer to Discussion on why the chemical filter replacement cycle cannot be calculated as half a year .
Contamination incident records. If leaks, abnormal discharges, or high-concentration exposures occur, the filter material may be consumed prematurely. The time and circumstances of such incidents should be recorded, and subsequent inspections should focus on tracking.
Maintain records. Every time the filter media is replaced, the compression components are adjusted, or a sealing problem is addressed, the date, reason, and result should be recorded. This information can help optimize replacement plans.
When the outlet concentration is close to the requirements or there is a sustained upward trend, replacement should be evaluated according to the plan.
Set the outlet concentration threshold. The threshold corresponds to the protection target, not the penetration criterion in the test report. Sensitive equipment or process areas may require stricter thresholds. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of what breakthrough concentration means in a chemical filter report .
Focus on trends rather than single points. The outlet concentration gradually increases, indicating that the medium is approaching the end of consumption. Trends tell a better story than single data. For specific efficiency calculations, please refer to Discussion on how to calculate the removal efficiency of chemical filters .
Frequency of regular testing. Key areas can be encrypted for inspection, and general areas can be appropriately relaxed. The frequency of inspection is determined based on protection objectives, pollution load and operating experience. For specific inspection items, please refer to Discussion of what items should be checked during daily inspection of chemical filters .
Remaining capacity assessment. If conditions permit, the remaining capacity of the filter material can be evaluated to determine how long it can last. For specific methods, please refer to Discussion of the difference between initial efficiency and lifetime efficiency of chemical filters .
This is the most common mistake made in odorless working conditions.
Some gases have no noticeable odor. Carbon monoxide, some acidic gases, and some organic vapors are not detectable by humans at low concentrations, but they have an impact on equipment or processes.
Odor thresholds vary from person to person. Different people have different abilities to perceive the same gas. Judgment based on smell is highly subjective and not suitable as a basis for maintenance. For specific differences, please refer to Discussion of whether chemical filters can remove ammonia from the air .
Conservation targets may be below the olfactory threshold. For purposes such as equipment anti-corrosion and process protection, the allowable outlet concentration may be far lower than the level that humans can smell. For specific applications, please refer to Discussion of why data centers need to assess gaseous corrosion contamination .
Maintenance plans should be developed based on data. The combination of outlet concentration, cumulative load, and operation records can support replacement decisions.
An equipment anti-corrosion project uses chemical filters to treat low-concentration acid gases. There was no obvious smell during operation, and the operation and maintenance personnel believed that replacement was not needed.
When regularly testing the outlet concentration, it was found that the acid gas concentration gradually increased and was close to the allowable value of the project. Although it can't be smelled, there are minor signs of corrosion inside the device.
Adjustment plan: According to the outlet concentration trend and cumulative load, arrange to replace the filter material in advance. After replacement, retest the outlet concentration to confirm that it has returned to the normal range. The maintenance plan has also been adjusted to manage according to outlet concentration trends and no longer relies on odor judgment.
Another data center project was regularly inspected through corrosion monitoring panels. After discovering that the corrosion trend was rising, the chemical filter section was replaced in a timely manner to avoid equipment failure.
These two cases illustrate that the absence of odor does not mean that replacement is not needed. The outlet concentration trend and cumulative load are the basis for judgment. involving When selecting a chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the target gas, outlet requirements and operating data to the supplier for verification.
