The pressing force of the chemical filter is an item that is easily overlooked during the installation process. The filter element is installed and the compression piece is screwed on, and it seems to be in place. However, if the pressing force is insufficient or the pressing is uneven, a series of problems may occur during operation.
The most immediate issue is bezel bypass. The air bypasses the gap between the filter element and the mounting frame without passing through chemical media. The outlet concentration may not decrease or fluctuate greatly. For specific bypass inspection methods, please refer to Discussion on how to check frame bypass after chemical filter installation .
Without sufficient compression, the gasket may not form a continuous fit.
The gasket is not compressed enough. The gasket requires a certain amount of compression to fill in the microscopic irregularities between the frame and filter element. When the pressing force is insufficient, the gasket may only touch lightly without forming effective compression. The four corners and the midpoint of the long side are places where compaction is prone to occur.
Gasket is displaced or dislodged. If the clamping force is insufficient, the gasket may shift during installation or operation. Some sealing gaskets are pasted on the frame of the filter element. If the pressing force is not enough, the air flow may blow open or shift the sealing gasket during operation. For specific installation inspection, please refer to Discussion on whether the chemical filter gasket should face the inlet or outlet side .
Frame deformation causes local gaps. If the frame itself is uneven and the clamping force is insufficient, the low points may not fit at all. In this case, even if the gasket quality is good, local bypass will occur.
Check method. After installation, observe the compression state of the gasket and whether the four edges and corners fit continuously. You can do a smoke or pressure check to confirm there is no obvious bypass. For specific inspection methods, please refer to Discussion on how to check frame bypass after chemical filter installation .
When you find that the gas effect is reduced, do not directly suspect the medium.
Check the frame and access door first. If the outlet concentration is high or fluctuates, first check the tightness of the filter element and the sealing of the frame. Bypass caused by insufficient compression may be manifested by a higher than expected outlet concentration, but the medium itself has not been consumed to the extent that it needs to be replaced. For detailed investigation, please refer to why the concentration at the outlet of the chemical filter is higher than that at the inlet . Discussion on
Check access doors and connections. If the access door, observation window, and pipeline interface of the filter section are not properly sealed, bypass will also occur. These positions and the tightness of the filter element need to be checked together.
Troubleshoot media problems. If the compression state is normal and the bypass inspection is also qualified, then evaluate whether the medium is consumed or whether the selection is appropriate. For specific life assessment, please refer to Discussion of how long chemical filters last .
Do not replace filter media without checking the bypass. If bypass is the root cause, changing the filter material will not solve the problem.
After confirming that the compression is insufficient, correct it according to the product instructions and frame structure.
Adjust the hold-down piece. Check the number, location and tightening status of the hold-down parts. Does the distribution of pressing points cover the entire length of the sealing surface? Are there pinch points at the corners and midpoints of the long sides? If the hold-down points are insufficient, they may need to be added or adjusted.
Control the pressing force. The bigger the pressing force, the better. Excessive compression may cause deformation of the outer frame and permanent deformation of the gasket, which may affect the seal. Follow the compression requirements in the product instructions and do not tighten by feel.
Check frame flatness. If the frame itself is uneven, adjusting the holddown may not resolve all the gaps. The frame needs to be assessed to see if it needs trimming.
Tighten in sequence. Tightening a single angle first may cause the filter element to tilt or the outer frame to warp. Tighten gradually in the order required by the design to avoid local overpressure. For specific methods, please refer to Discussion on how to check frame bypass after chemical filter installation .
After the chemical filter of a certain project was installed, the outlet concentration was higher than expected. Initial suspicion is that there is a problem with media selection.
The investigation found that the sealing gasket between the outer frame of the filter element and the installation frame only covered the four corners, and there was no pressing point in the middle of the long side. The gasket failed to effectively compress in the middle section of the long side, forming a local bypass. The air bypasses the bypass path and does not pass through the chemical media.
Adjustment plan: Add a compression point in the middle of the long side and re-tighten in sequence. After the sealing gasket is continuously fitted, the retest outlet concentration returns to the normal range. The media itself is not replaced.
This case illustrates: Insufficient compression will directly affect the gas treatment effect. Don’t just suspect the medium when troubleshooting. involving When selecting a chemical filter product series , it is recommended to provide the installation sealing requirements and product information to the supplier for verification.
