When performing partial clean renovation of an electronic assembly line, FFU is sometimes installed above the workstation to provide downward clean air supply. Some projects are worried: Will local FFU air supply bring dust from adjacent areas into the workstation?
The answer to this question depends on several conditions. FFU inhales air from the air inlet side, filters it and sends it to the workstation. If the FFU inlet air comes from a clean area, the particle concentration in the supply air is lower. If the air intake of the FFU comes from a polluted area, or there are dust sources around the work station, even if the FFU itself has qualified filtration efficiency, the work station may still be contaminated.
In addition, local FFU air supply will change the airflow around the workstation. When supplying downward air, if there is no enclosure or airflow boundary at the workstation, ambient air may enter the operating area from the side. If there is dust in the adjacent area, lateral airflow may bring dust into the workstation.
Therefore, whether the local FFU air supply brings in nearby dust depends not only on the FFU itself, but also on the source of air inlet, regional boundaries and return paths. Aili Industrial has complete production capabilities in FFU matching in the electronics industry and can provide air supply solutions based on workstation conditions. The source of FFU air intake is the first step to determine the pollution risk. If the FFU is installed on the suspended ceiling mezzanine, the air intake comes from the mezzanine air. The cleanliness of the interlayer air depends on whether the interlayer is connected to the clean area, whether there is return air treatment, and whether there are other pollution sources.
If the interlayer air comes from the cleanroom return air, the particle concentration is usually lower. If the mezzanine is connected to an ordinary factory building or other polluted area, the incoming air may contain more particles. Particles may also be generated if there is equipment, pipelines or construction activities within the mezzanine.
For equipment-side FFU or EFU, the air intake may come from inside the equipment or from the surrounding environment. The cleanliness of the air inlet source needs to be confirmed.
Zone boundaries determine whether outside air can easily enter the workstation. If the workstation has an enclosure, soft curtains or baffles, there are fewer paths for outside air to enter. If the workstation is completely open, ambient air may enter freely.
In an electronics assembly line, workstations usually include equipment, conveyor belts, and operating stations. These structures can provide some airflow boundaries, but are not necessarily complete. If workstations are close together, dust from adjacent workstations may enter through lateral airflow.
Management of area boundaries can include: setting up partitions or soft curtains; adjusting the distance between workstations; specifying material and personnel flow paths; and increasing local exhaust near pollution sources.
The return path affects the stability of the workstation airflow. If the FFU supplies downward air, the air needs to be exhausted from the workstation. If the return air path is smooth, the clean airflow can pass through the operating area from top to bottom and take away particles. If the return air path is blocked, airflow may become trapped in the workstation or form a backflow.
If the return air path is close to adjacent contaminated areas, the airflow may bring nearby dust into the workstation. Therefore, the return air path should be as far away from the pollution source as possible or isolated from the pollution source.
To verify whether local FFU brings in nearby dust, it can be measured under actual operating conditions. The verification content includes: wind speed and cleanliness of the FFU air outlet surface; wind speed and air flow direction at the workstation operating position; particle concentration in the adjacent area; particle changes during personnel operation and material movement.
Anemometers, particle counters and smoke generating devices may be used. If particle concentrations at the workstation are found to correlate with adjacent areas, the airflow direction and boundaries can be examined.
To reduce the introduction of nearby dust, you can start from several directions. Confirm that the FFU air inlet source is clean, and deal with the air inlet if necessary. Increase workstation enclosures or airflow boundaries to reduce lateral airflow. Adjust the return air path to avoid bringing nearby dust into the workstation. Increase local exhaust or isolation near adjacent pollution sources.

In the design stage of the local FFU solution for the electronic assembly line, it is recommended to confirm the following with the FFU manufacturer and process party: workstation layout and adjacent pollution sources; FFU air inlet sources; regional boundaries and enclosure conditions; return air paths; target cleanliness and wind speed; personnel operation and material movement methods; verification methods and judgment standards; whether local exhaust or isolation needs to be added.

Whether the local FFU air supply of an electronic assembly line brings in nearby dust depends on the air inlet source, area boundaries and return flow path. Only increasing downward air supply without managing surrounding pollution may allow unclean air to enter the operating area from the side. Inlet air sources, area boundaries, and return air paths need to be considered uniformly and confirmed through airflow verification.
