The design goal of a unidirectional flow area is to allow clean air to pass through the work area in a stable direction and at a uniform speed. However, in actual operation, the opening of doorways, air outlet from air conditioners, movement of personnel and exhaust from equipment may deflect the protective airflow, causing lateral interference. The interference is not necessarily large, but as long as the direction is facing the protected area, background air may be introduced into the product location.
Identifying lateral interference cannot rely solely on static measurements. A combination of airflow visualization, local wind direction and speed measurements, and operational correlation recording is required to find the true source of interference.
The protective effect of the unidirectional flow area depends on the stable airflow direction and boundaries. If the boundary is breached, airflow may be deflected, entrained, or backflowed. Common sources of boundary breaches include:
Door opening and personnel entry and exit;
The air conditioner blows directly from the air outlet;
Adjacent workstation exhaust or equipment cooling fans;
Material handling and cart passing;
Mechanical structure obstruction or movement.
These sources do not necessarily exist continuously but may cause transient disturbances at specific points in time. When judging, the time of occurrence and action correlation should be recorded.
Airflow visualization can help observe airflow direction, deflection and backflow. Common methods include smoke, silk thread, or tracer gas. When observing, you should pay attention to:
The path of airflow from the outlet surface to the work surface;
Whether airflow is deflected at doorways or openings;
Whether there is background air being drawn into the protected area;
Whether the air flow is stable near the work surface.
Visualization should be done under actual operating conditions, not just empty conditions. Personnel movements, door openings, and mechanical movements should be included in the observation. For boundary verification of open workstations, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation? , understand the basic ideas of border protection.
Visualization helps spot anomalies, and measurements help quantify the extent of change. When measuring, please note:
Measure at key workstations instead of just measuring the wind surface;
Record changes in wind speed and direction before and after the disturbance occurs;
Cover different heights and operating states;
Record the distance between the measuring point and the interference source.
If it is found that the wind speed drops significantly or the direction deflects at a certain location, the cause should be determined based on the location of the interference source. The problem of average wind speed masking local differences can be referred to Why does the measured average wind speed not mean that the air flow is uniform?。
Lateral disturbances tend to be synchronized with specific operations. For example:
Airflow deflection when opening the door;
Wind speed fluctuates when people pass by;
The direction changes when the equipment exhaust is started;
Local disturbance as the cart passes.
Recording these temporal relationships helps distinguish between sustained and transient disturbances. Continuous interference requires adjustments to the structure or airflow organization; transient interference can be evaluated to determine whether it affects the product exposure period. The particle changes after personnel enter can be referred to How to locate the cause of increased particle number after personnel enter?。
Doorways, transfer windows and loading and unloading openings are the main paths for lateral interference to enter. When the door is opened, the change in pressure difference on both sides will cause the air flow direction to change; when people or materials pass through, the air flow boundary at the opening is broken.
When judging, you should check:
Is the pressure difference at the door stable?
Whether the airflow is deflected when opening the door;
Whether the opening is facing the protected area;
Is there a buffer room or air curtain to reduce interference.
For the opening treatment of closed equipment cavity, please refer to How to plan clean air supply for closed equipment cavities? , understand the relationship between openings and airflow boundaries.
Air conditioning supply vents and exhaust equipment are common sources of lateral interference. If the air-conditioning air blows directly into the workstation, the protective airflow may be deflected; if the suction of the exhaust equipment is too strong, the protective airflow may be drawn away.
When making judgments, the position, direction and operating status of the air-conditioning vents and exhaust equipment should be recorded, and the airflow changes when opening and closing should be compared. If the interference comes from air conditioning or exhaust, priority should be given to adjusting the direction of the air outlet or air volume balance instead of just adjusting the local air supply equipment.
The movement of people and material handling will move the surrounding air, creating instantaneous lateral airflow. When the cart passes, the disturbance range is larger. These disturbances are not necessarily continuous but may affect protection during critical operating periods.
When making judgments, the movement of personnel and material paths should be recorded, and the location and time of interference should be observed. If interference frequently affects the protected area, consider adjusting the moving lines, adding baffles, or changing the location of the workstation. For details, please refer to How to establish a local clean area in an open workstation? Learn how to deal with lateral interference.
After lateral interference is discovered, measures such as adjusting the direction of the air outlet, adding baffles or soft curtains, changing the position of the workstation, and adjusting the size of the air supply surface can be taken. It should be re-verified after rectification:
Whether the wind speed and direction of the protected area have been restored;
Whether interference is effectively reduced;
Whether the operating space still meets the requirements;
Whether the protection is stable under dynamic conditions.
Rectification should not only focus on a single indicator, but also confirm operation convenience and maintenance conditions. Insufficient maintenance channels will increase subsequent expenditures. This is reflected in what later expenses will be increased due to insufficient maintenance channels . There is a more detailed analysis of

The static test in a certain unidirectional flow area passed, but the particles at the station were occasionally high during production. Airflow visualization revealed that when the door was opened, the airflow was deflected from the doorway into the protected area, and the background air was drawn in. Adjustment method: adjust the pressure difference at the door, increase the buffer room, and adjust the air supply direction. After adjustment, the deflection when opening the door is significantly reduced, and the particles at the workstation are restored to stability.
In another project, the air-conditioning outlet is facing the workstation, and the protective airflow is blown away. Adjustment method: Adjust the direction of the air conditioning outlet and add a baffle on the side of the workstation. After adjustment, the wind speed and direction of the protected area were restored.
These two situations illustrate that the lateral interference in the unidirectional flow area needs to be comprehensively identified by combining air flow visualization, local measurement and operation records, and cannot be judged solely by static data.
