What are EC motors and AC motors?

In FFU (fan filter unit), the motor is the core component that determines the performance, energy consumption and service life of the equipment. Currently, FFU mainly uses two motor types on the market: traditional AC motors and new generation EC brushless DC motors.

AC motor (alternating current motor) is a traditional motor solution that uses alternating current to generate a rotating magnetic field in the stator winding to drive the rotor to rotate. AC motors have mature technology and simple structure, and have been used in the FFU field for decades.

EC motor (electronically commutated motor) is a new generation of brushless DC motor solution. The built-in electronic controller converts alternating current into direct current, and then controls the stator winding energization sequence through the electronic circuit to achieve brushless commutation. EC motors combine the convenience of AC power input with the high efficiency of DC motors.

To put it simply, AC motors are 'traditional mature solutions' and EC motors are 'efficient and intelligent solutions' - both can drive FFU operation, but there are significant differences in performance in terms of energy consumption, control, and lifespan.

The core difference between EC motors and AC motors

1. Energy consumption and efficiency are different

This is the most essential difference between the two.

The efficiency of an AC motor drops significantly when running at part load. The efficiency of the motor itself is usually around 65%-75%, and part of the electrical energy will be converted into heat instead of power during operation.

EC motors can maintain high efficiency in the full speed range, and the motor efficiency can reach more than 90%. Compared with AC motors, EC motors can achieve energy savings of 20%-50%.

Taking a single FFU as an example, the power consumption of an EC motor is about 70-180W, while that of an AC motor is about 120-400W. In large-scale clean rooms (hundreds to thousands of FFUs operating simultaneously), this difference brings a considerable difference in energy consumption.

2. Different speed regulation and control methods

AC motors have relatively limited speed control capabilities. Ordinary AC motors are not speed-adjustable and can only operate at power frequency; the variable voltage speed adjustment range is narrow (usually 40%-100%), and the torque drops significantly at low speeds; usually only supports 3rd or 5th gear switch speed adjustment.

EC motor supports smooth stepless speed regulation, wide speed regulation range (usually 10%-100%), and constant low-speed torque. It supports a variety of communication speed adjustment methods such as 0-10V, PWM or RS485, and can be directly connected with the FFU controller or group control system to achieve remote speed adjustment, speed feedback, energy consumption monitoring and other functions.

3. Heat and noise are different

AC motors generate a lot of heat during operation, which will be released into the clean room and increase the cooling burden on the air conditioning system. In terms of noise, AC motors contain power frequency hum and the overall noise is high.

The EC motor generates significantly less heat, which can effectively reduce the additional load on the clean room air conditioning system. Lower noise, less electromagnetic noise, and quieter operation.

4. Life span and maintenance are different

AC motors use brush commutation structures, and the brushes have wear problems.

The EC motor adopts a brushless design, which reduces wear. The bearings are maintenance-free sealed bearings. The maintenance cycle can be extended and the service life is longer.

5. Different startup characteristics

The starting current of AC motors is relatively large, usually 5-7 times the rated current.

EC motors support soft start, the starting current is close to the rated current, and there is no impact on the power grid. It is suitable for frequent starts and stops or group control.

6. Initial cost and long-term cost are different

AC motors have lower initial purchase costs and are usually 30%-50% cheaper than EC motors.

The initial purchase cost of EC motors is relatively high. However, from the perspective of the entire life cycle, the cost recovery period brought by EC motor energy saving is usually 12-24 months, and operating costs will continue to be reduced after the cost is recovered.

How to choose EC motor or AC motor?

When selecting a model, it is recommended to make a comprehensive judgment from the following perspectives:

1. Look at the running time and scale

  • 24-hour continuous operation, large-scale clean room (more than hundreds of FFU) → EC motor , energy-saving benefits can recover the price difference within 1-2 years

  • Small projects with low usage frequency and small number of FFU → AC motor can control the initial investment

2. Look at the control requirements

  • Requires precise speed regulation, remote monitoring, and access to a group control system → EC motor supports multiple control methods such as 0-10V/PWM/RS485

  • Just simple switch control, no fine adjustment required → AC motor can meet basic needs

3. Depend on environmental requirements

  • Noise-sensitive scenes (laboratories, hospitals, precision electronic workshops) → EC motors , lower noise

  • Scenarios sensitive to heat → EC motor , which generates less heat and can reduce air conditioning load

4. Look at budget strategies

  • Limited budget, minimizing initial investment → AC motor

  • Pursuing the optimization of the whole life cycle cost → EC motor , significant long-term energy saving benefits

Common misunderstandings

Misunderstanding 1: EC motors only save some electricity. The advantages of EC motors are not limited to energy saving, but also include stepless speed regulation, low noise, low heat, long life, intelligent control and other improvements.

Myth 2: AC motors are cheaper and the total cost is lower. AC motors have low initial costs, but in long-term operation they consume high energy, generate heat and increase air conditioning load, and their life cycle costs are often higher than EC motors.

Myth 3: EC motors are not needed for small projects. Even if the number of FFU is not large, if it operates continuously for 24 hours and the electricity bill is high, the energy saving benefits of EC motors are still considerable.
